Tri-County Call to Service Summit

The Citizens Campaign is hosting its 3rd Annual South Jersey Call to Service Summit on Monday, May 21st, 5:30 pm – 8pm, at Gloucester County College in Sewell, and featuring keynote speaker New Jersey State Comptroller Matthew Boxer.

The Tri-County Call to Service Summit will include an opportunity for attendees to learn insider tips and gain the political know-how to identify community problems like government waste and inefficiencies and implement common sense solutions.

New Jersey State Comptroller Matthew Boxer will discuss his office’s progress in uncovering millions of dollars in government waste, in municipal, county, and even interstate agencies like the Delaware River Port Authority.

Following his presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to attend one of four breakout sessions with leading experts to learn how they can begin to implement reform in their hometown:

-Citizen Legislator: How to bring your voice to the table and get results.

-Citizen Journalist: Keep your friends and neighbors informed on important news and events using online resources.

-Political Party Post: Whether you’re Republican or Democrat, seize the power offered to local political party leaders, including the power of endorsement and the power to select the party platform.

-Appointed Office:  Have a direct impact on your community by serving on policy making boards and commissions.

Previous summit attendees have gone on to serve to save millions of dollars through municipal government proposals and serve on important community boards and commissions.

For example, at the 2011 Call to Service Summit at Rutgers-Camden University, Camden resident Tamra Marsh attended the appointed office session  and soon thereafter was appointed to Camden’s Green  Team.  Since then she has also gone on to take the Citizen Legislator class, and gained adoption of a proposal to save the city and school district more than $4 million dollars.

Monroe Township (Gloucester County) resident Michael Kretschmer also attended a summit, where he learned about the impact boards and commissions have in his community. Michael went back to his hometown, applied and was appointed to serve on the Economic Development Commission in Monroe Township. Michael went on to “pay it forward” and has hosted two town summits to educate others on the process, resulting in eight residents being appointed municipal boards so far.

Residents from Cumberland, Salem, and Gloucester counties are invited to follow in Tamra and Michael’s footsteps and Answer the Call to Service.

The Tri-County Summit is sponsored by: Gloucester County College, Community Foundation of South Jersey, United Way of Gloucester County, Camden-Gloucester Jaycees, Gloucester County Branch of the NAACP, Volunteer Center of Gloucester County, South Jersey Land and Water Trust.

This Summit is free and open to the public. There is limited seating, so attendees are asked to RSVP to Felix Moulier at (856) 336-8335 or email felix@thecitizenscampaign.org.
