GCC Offers Personal Improvement Workshops in August

The college's Center for People in Transition is offering help on coping with divorce.

Gloucester County College’s Center for People in Transition has organized an assortment of new personal improvement workshops in August, which are free of charge unless otherwise noted. To register, please call (856) 415-2222 or email PeopleInTransition@gccnj.edu.

Financial Strategies for Divorcees–This seminar attempts to explain how individuals can manage their financial affairs while going through a divorce. Instructor Monique Castillo, financial adviser, will help participants become organized, navigate financial paperwork and become more aware of critical timelines that can have a financial impact on the future. Actionable checklists administered during the workshop help individuals chart personal financial progress. This seminar runs Thursday, Aug. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Don’t Give Your Power Away–Stop letting power be drained by surrounding people. Divorce, especially, can make one feel overwhelmed. Reclaim that lost power with help from a workshop on Monday, Aug. 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Instructor Kay Larrabee shows the simple actions and systems to protect the divorcee and their children from trauma. Start Right! Business Plan Basics–This 12-hour course is held in four 3-hour sessions. Participants must attend all four sessions to receive the full curriculum. After completing the seminar, participants will have created a first draft of a business plan involving an in-depth presentation, organizing a written business plan format, as well as addressing legal, marketing, accounting and financial issues.

Additional information covered in this workshop includes developing financial statements, working with operations and suppliers, buying a business, creating a marketing plan, competition analysis, loan requests, and cash-flow statements. Three-Step Process for Change–This interactive session offers advice on managing the many changes and transitions that take place during a divorce. Learn the three-step process to help get in touch with emotions, feelings, and actions and discover how to change and create more positive outcomes. Sharon Roth-Lichtenfeld, a certified professional life coach, will present the workshop on Wednesday, Aug. 10, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Financial Strategies for Widows–Ninety percent of all women will be solely responsible for their finances at some point in their lives. Financial adviser Monique Castillo leads this seminar on financial considerations for widows. Attendees to the Thursday, Aug. 11 seminar will leave with a newly acquired focus in moving forward financially. The workshop runs from noon to 1 p.m.

Laws of Separation and Divorce–Presenters Allyn Marie Smedley, Esq. and Michelle Ferreri, Esq., members of the Gloucester County Bar Association’s Family Law Committee, will be at GCC on Monday, Aug. 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. Discussions will range from court procedures, timing, grounds for divorce, selecting an attorney, and setting goals. Issues include equitable distribution, custody, visitation and alimony.

Financial Aspects of Divorce–This one night class is designed to help navigate the complicated process and stressful ordeal of divorce. The class covers the broad range of financial issues faced when going through divorce to reduce costly mistakes, clarify expectations and begin planning for a “successful” divorce. The workshop is presented by financial adviser Joseph Johnson, owner of Main Street Financial and takes place on Wednesday, Aug. 17 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

How to Avoid Costly Housing Mistakes Before, During and After Divorce–Divorce is rarely easy and often means a lot of difficult decisions. One of the most important decisions is what to do with the co-owned home. Brian Ziegenfuss from RE/MAX Connection will provide suggestions on how to protect one’s interest in the sale of a house while maximizing profits. The workshop will also review lifestyle changes, new budgets and housing affordability. This workshop will be offered on 
Wednesday, Aug. 31, from 7 to 9 p.m.
