Johnson Falls in First Round of Singles

Marthalyn Johnson's state singles tournament ends in first round, while West Deptford hopes to advance in team tournament today.

West Deptford High School's Marthalyn Johnson had the honor of participating in the NJSIAA Girls' Tennis Singles Tournament over the weekend. Her tournament did not last last, however, as she fell to Livingston High School's Elaine Vernoff 6-0, 6-0 in the first round on Saturday.

Johnson, who has been the catalyst in the Eagles' run to the playoffs and first-round win over Willingboro, earned a berth for the tournament after finishing the regular season with a record of 8-5. She clinched West Deptford's playoff victory over Willingboro on Thursday, defeating Ariel Garraway in a second set tiebreaker to send the Eagles to the second round. Johnson's win was the ninth of the season.

The Eagles hope to keep their playoff run alive this afternoon, as they visit Cedar Creek in the South Jersey Group 2 Quarterfinals. Cedar Creek, the No. 3 seed, easily defeated Pleasantville in the opening round and enters the match with a record of 10-4.
