West Deptford’s Kevin Cianfarini raced to a top-30 finish and the Eagles boys’ cross-country team scored its best finish in the last decade in Group 2 at the state championships at Holmdel Saturday.
Cianfarini put up a 17:19 at the notoriously difficult Holmdel Park course to pace the team, which bunched four runners in the top 50 to finish eighth overall, the first time it’s cracked the top 10 in recent history.
Just behind Cianfarini were Jon Ladner (17:28, 36th), Ray Parsons (17:35, 39th) and Dale Johnson (17:47, 49th). The Eagles also got a key contribution from freshman Mitchel Wiliczek (18:28, 92nd), who helped clinch the top-10 spot as a team.
Andrew Coppola (18:55, 116th) and Matt Shinkle (18:58, 117th) rounded out the race for West Deptford.
The Eagles missed out on seventh place as a team by a single point in what was a tightly contested team race—just 36 points separated fifth from 10th places.
On the girls’ side, Millie Kipp was 45th in 21:14 to close out her season.
