Smith's Speed Adds Extra Dimension to WDHS Football

With each passing week, Connor Smith becomes a bigger part of the West Deptford football team's offense.

When opposing coaches break down film of the football team, they have their hands full when it comes to the Eagles' running backs.

A game plan must be put together to stop the power running of Gerald Towns and Josh Cornelius. The coaches also have to take long looks at Arrin Bundy and Phil Fisher, who have both had highlight runs this season.

And, as if that doesn’t take long enough, they need to look at yet another talented running back at head coach Clyde Folsom’s disposal: Connor Smith.

Smith saw his busiest night of the season last week, when he carried the ball nine times for 93 yards and a touchdown against Haddon Heights. His score came on a magnificent 46-yard scamper where he showed off the speed that's setting him apart.

“On paper, he’s our fastest football player,” said Folsom. “He was a receiver a year ago, and we really need him on defense, but he does add another dimension to us at halfback. Him and Phil Fisher run real well for us.”

Smith, a junior, saw just one carry in the first week of the season and produced 36 yards out of it. In week 2, he carried the ball twice for 64 yards. Against Haddonfield, he got four carries and gained 44 yards.

It is no surprise that as Smith continues producing big gains from his touches, the number of touches he is getting is also on the upswing.

“You don’t see him a lot in the stat line, because we get down to the two yard line and hand it to other people, but he is a heck of a runner,” senior quarterback Jake Hannan. “He gives us effort every single time.”

With so many running backs playing a part for the Eagles–even reserve running back Isaiah Worthy has three touchdowns–the number of chances to carry the ball can’t go up forever. After all, the five other running backs are also producing positive yardage and there is only one football to go around.

For his part, Smith is happy with his role in the offense. He understands that the Eagles like to throw a bunch of different looks at their opponents. Asked about what his best asset to the team is, Smith didn't hesitate a second.

“I bring speed,” said Smith. “I have the ability to get outside pretty quickly.”

Look for the speed to once again be on display today when West Deptford travels to face Woodbury at 10:30 a.m. It will be the first road game of the season for West Deptford.

“Playing on a Saturday morning is definitely going to be a big challenge,” said Hannan. “We just we need to have a great week of practice and we will be fine.”
