Soccer Brackets Released

The West Deptford girls' team got a No. 4 seed, while the boys' team earned a No. 8 seed in the Group 2 playoffs.

The NJSIAA released its playoff brackets for boys’ and girls’ soccer Thursday, giving the teams at West Deptford High School a glimpse of what lies ahead.

The West Deptford girls’ team earned a No. 4 seed in the South Jersey group 2 playoffs and opens at home, Tuesday, against No. 13 Atlantic Tech. The Eagles (12-5) have won four-of-five entering today’s contest with Haddon Heights. Atlantic Tech figures to be of little threat, entering the postseason at 5-13-1.

With a victory, West Deptford would advance to the quarterfinals and take on the winner of No. 5 Middle Township/No. 12 Buena. While the Eagles cannot afford to look ahead of anyone, they may be hard-pressed not to think about a semifinal matchup with No.1 Haddonfield. The Bulldawgs—who are the favorite to defend their Group 2 South Jersey title—defeated West Deptford twice this season.

On the boys’ side, West Deptford opens on the road against No. 8 Middle Township, Monday. The Eagles enter the playoffs on the heels of some of their best defensive soccer. West Deptford has three-straight shutouts, including a 1-0 over Gateway, who possesses the league’s leading scorer.

West Deptford has a final tune-up later against Haddon Heights, who defeated the Eagles 3-0 earlier this season. That game was postponed Thursday.

Despite having to play on the road, the matchup seems to favor the Eagles. Lower Cape May (8-6-1) has had most of its success against teams in the Cape-Atlantic League Nation Division not exactly loaded with top teams. Lower has struggled against top teams, including losses to Absegami (8-0), Buena (5-0) and Egg Harbor (3-0).

If West Deptford can win its first-round contest it will have a familiar foe waiting for it in the quarterfinals: Haddonfield. The Bulldawgs are the No. 1 seed and earned a first-round bye.

West Deptford has played Haddonfield tough in a pair of games this season, but lost a pair of one-goal decisions.

The playoff schedule may be forced to undergo changes due to the weather. Patch will keep you up to date with any postponements.
