Sports: A Look Back at Last Week and What's to Come

District wrestling and state bowling highlight a good week for the Eagles' athletic department.

Wrestling took center stage last week and will once again be the focal point this week local grapplers compete to earn a trip to Atlantic City for the NJSIAA State Individual State Tournament. Below are the highlights of the past week and what to keep an eye on in the coming seven days:

WRESTLING

Ten members of the West Deptford High School wrestling team of the District 29 Tournament on Friday, positioning themselves to make a run at a district title on Saturday.

On Saturday, Drew Spector added to his already stocked resume by winning his at 140 pounds. The win was Spector’s 99th of his career. Also winning a title was junior Evan Zuzulock, who won his 119-pound weight class. Six other Eagles placed either second or third and will be making the trip to Egg Harbor this week for the Region 8 Tournament.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

The Eagles had a tough week, going 0-3, but played competitive in losses to Sterling, Woodbury and Northern Burlington. The loss to the Thundering Herd may have been the toughest one as it was a 60-56 decision that was close throughout. Tom Jakubowski had a big game, scoring 24 points, while Tim Fair had 14.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

The girls went 2-1 for the week, beating Moorestown Friends and Woodbury, while suffering a setback against Sterling.

The Eagles were outplayed in a 69-40 loss to Sterling on Tuesday but responded by edging Woodbury, 51-50. West Deptford was able to defeat Woodbury thanks to a strong defensive effort in the fourth quarter. The Eagles trailed 46-39 entering the final frame, but outscored Woodbury 12-4 down the stretch. Meagan Kirschling led West Deptford with 12 points and Kelly Brewster had 10.

BOWLING

Morgan Brown capped off her outstanding sophomore season by in the JNSIAA Individual State Championships. In the team championships, the in Group II, while the boys placed fifth.

THIS WEEK

The Region 8 Tournament gets going on Tuesday in Egg Harbor Township with the second- and third-place finishers from Districts 29, 30, 31 and 32 competing for a spot in the quarterfinals. The tournament resumes on Friday and will be completed Saturday with the top three finishers in each weight class advancing to states. Tournament seeds are expected to be released on Monday.

This week also brings to close the regular seasons for the boys' and girls' basketball teams. The girls will be using their final three games to gear up for their playoff showdown against Woodstown next Monday, while the boys hope to find success in their final two games to wrap up a difficult season.
