Sports: WDHS Week In Review/Preview

The playoffs begin this week for three West Deptford programs.

Last week offered plenty of excitement around the athletic complex, with the football team posting another shutout, the cross-country teams shattering records and the soccer teams scoring goals in bunches. Yet, last week can hardly compete with the action that will take place this week as the NJSIAA South Jersey, Group 2 playoffs start for a trio of teams.

Below, is a look back at the week that was for West Deptford sports, and a look ahead to this week’s playoff matchups.

Football

It’s now 15 quarters and counting for the Eagles’ defense, which has not allowed a point in over three contests. West Deptford’s , again holding an opponent under 100 yards of total offense in a 46-0 victory.

The offense spread the wealth as six different players found the end zone. Quarterback Jake Hannan led the way with a 3-yard sneak and a 74-yard pass to Tom Jakubowski. Gerald Towns also had a solid day, rushing for a pair of scores, including a 59-yarder.

Boys' soccer

In its final tune-ups before the playoffs, the Eagles scored a and a 7-0 decision against Lindenwold. Kyle Redrow led the way against Lindenwold, collecting a hat trick while dishing out three assists.

The victories left the Eagles 4-0-1 in their last five. West Deptford begins its quest for a South Jersey title Tuesday against Collingswood at .

Girls' soccer

The girls have been equally as effective down the stretch, winning their last four games to close the regular season 14-4. A No. 3 seed in the Group 2 playoffs, West Deptford scored wins over Woodbury (8-1) and Kingsway (2-1) last week. In typical West Deptford fashion, the goal scoring was spread around. Four different girls scored against the Knights, while seven players scored against the Thundering Herd, with Regina Kelly netted a pair.

West Deptford opens its playoff run today at home against Buena.

Field hockey

The field hockey team had just one game last week, but it had enough drama for several. The Eagles dominated play against Haddon Heights, but had trouble finishing in a 2-1 overtime victory. The game was played for a cause as each team sported pink and white shirts for breast cancer awareness. It was also Senior Day, adding extra incentive for the veteran players.

West Deptford finally pulled out the victory when that had been sent in by Sydney Ponto, and redirected by Amanda Hojnowski.

The Eagles open up their playoff quest Tuesday against Middle Township at home.

Cross-country

Running on its home course for the final time this season, the West Deptford cross-country teams put together their best performance of the season, taking down course records.

Ray Parsons led the way with a 17:54 toon the winding, difficult course, with Kevin Cianfarini, Leo Impagliazzo and Phil Palmer all crossing the line under 18:30 to beat GCIT, 16-44.

On the girls’ side, Millie Kipp set a personal record and clocked the second-fastest time ever by a West Deptford runner, finishing in 19:40, in a 21-34 win.

This week

–The girls’ soccer team hosts Buena today at 2 p.m. in the first round of the Group 2 playoffs. If the Eagles win, they will host a second-round game on Thursday.

–The boys’ soccer team hosts Collingswood Tuesday at 4 p.m. If the Eagles win, they will either be home or away Friday, pending the outcome of Buena-Middle Township.

–The field hockey team begins its playoff journey Tuesday against Middle Township at 2 p.m. With a victory, the Eagles will likely be heading to Woodstown on Friday.

–The boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams will look to make it to the state championships when they compete in the NJSIAA sectional meet, Saturday at 10 a.m. at Delsea.

–The football team competes in its final game before the playoff cutoff on Saturday against Overbrook at 2 p.m.
