Sports: WDHS Week In Review/Preview

A look back at the week that was, and ahead to this week's schedule.

The girls’ and boys’ soccer teams, as well as the field hockey squad, all found success last week, but were unable to pick up victories against rival Haddonfield. Meanwhile, the tennis team was eliminated from the playoffs and the football team bounced back with a commanding victory over Haddon Heights.

Below is a look back at the week that was in athletics, and a glimpse at the week ahead.

BOYS' SOCCER

It was a busy week for the boys' soccer team, as it recorded lopsided wins over Paulsboro and Overbrook, but saw its four-game winning streak halted in a 1-0 loss to Haddonfield.

over Paulsboro on Monday and followed it with a 7-1 decision against Overbrook. Tim Krott and Lewis Hunter scored twice in the victory. The Eagles (7-5-1) were unable to avenge an early-season loss to Haddonfield, as the Bulldawgs got the game’s only goal midway through the first half.

GIRLS' SOCCER

The story was mostly the same for the girls’ soccer team, as it went 2-1 on the week with wins over Paulsboro and Overbrook, and a loss to Haddonfield. Tina Furfari netted a hat trick against Paulsboro, while six different players scored in a 6-0 win against Overbrook. Alicia Barger recorded a shutout in both games to raise her total on the season to five.

GIRLS' TENNIS

A playoff run wasn’t in the cards for the Eagles, as they were bounced in the opening round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II playoffs West Deptford qualified for the postseason as the No. 9 seed, but could not keep pace with 8th-seeded Pemberton. First singles Marthalyn Johnson came away with the Eagles' only point of the match, knocking off Pemberton's Floren Reola, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

There still remains plenty for West Deptford to play for though, as the team has five remaining matches on the schedule.

FIELD HOCKEY

Once again Haddonfield proved to be a thorn in West Deptford's side, as the Bulldawgs held off a late rally by the Eagles in a 2-1 win that just about wraps up the Liberty title. and made a stick save at the goal line to prevent Haddonfield from scoring another, but the Eagles fell to 7-3. Earlier in the week, West Deptford scored a 9-0 win against Overbrook.

FOOTBALL

On paper, Friday’s matchup against Haddon Heights looked to be a competitive matchup, but it didn’t take the Eagles long to dispel that notion. West Deptford had success on the ground and in the air in a runaway . Connor Smith, Arrin Bundy, Gerald Towns, Josh Cornelius, Phil Fisher and Isaiah Worthy each scored a touchdown on the ground, while Jake Hannan hooked up with Tom Jakubowski for a long touchdown through the air.

CROSS COUNTRY

The boys' and girls' cross country teams did not have any conference meets last week.

THIS WEEK

–The girls’ tennis team will be busy this week with matches today, Wednesday and Thursday and the Colonial Conference Tournament on Friday.

–The boys’ and girls’ cross country teams wrap up their conference season on Tuesday with tri-meets against Haddonfield and Haddon Heights. The meet represents the biggest challenge for both teams and will determine who wins the Liberty Division.

–The boys’ soccer team has a chance to rebound from the loss to the Bulldawgs with home games on Tuesday and Thursday against Audubon and Collingswood.

–The field hockey team will be in action three times, with its toughest test coming on Friday against Haddon Heights.

–Girls’ soccer will be on the road for a pair of games, traveling to Audubon on Tuesday and Collingswood Thursday.

–For the first time this season, the football team will hit the road, though it won't have to take too long a ride–the team will head down Delaware Street on Saturday to lock up with Woodbury at 10:30 a.m.
