Sports Week in Review/Preview

Take a look back, and ahead, at the week in sports at West Deptford High School.

With the elimination of the girls' basketball team from the playoffs, the winter athletic season at West Deptford High School has officially come to a close. It was a fine winter in West Deptford, but the calendar dictates that it's time to move to the spring season.

Here is a look back at the week that was for the Eagles and the week ahead.

Diving

The NJSIAA Diving Championships were held on Tuesday at the College of New Jersey and the Eagles’ Brandon Thayres took 10th. Thayres finished with a score of 235.55, which was the best of any Gloucester County diver. The winner was Franklin’s Ross Edfort.

Girls' basketball

The girls basketball team started the week with a playoff victory over 41-28 that was the program's first playoff win in over a decade. Danielle McKeown paced the offense with 14 points, while Lauren Boegly added eight.

Unfortunately, the Eagles playoff run would only last for two days, as West Deptford was eliminated by No. 1 seeded Sterling on Wednesday. The Eagles were able to stay competitive for much of the game, but could not find enough offense in a .

The loss means the end of the high school basketball careers of seniors Tina D'Aiutolo, Angel Hambrecht, Kelly Brewster, Antionette Lopez and Lauren Boegly.

Led by first-year head coach J McKeown, the team finished 18-10.

Coming up

With March now a week old, the high school sports calendar shifts its focus to the spring season. Practices are underway for the baseball, softball, track and field, golf and lacrosse teams and scrimmages start as early as Friday, with the baseball team hosting Paul VI at 3:45 p.m. The softball team will host Washington Township on Saturday at 2 p.m. and the boys lacrosse team will travel to take on Holmdel at 3 p.m.
