Sports Week in Review/Preview: Baseball on the Rise
The baseball team's rise highlights the week that was at West Deptford, while several teams look forward to games under the lights this week.
Teams playing on a diamond have gone in contrasting directions over the last week, as the softball team has found itself in losing streak, while the baseball team has gotten back into the race for a conference title. Also last week, the girls' lacrosse team matched its win total from last year and the boys' track team continued its winning ways. Here is a look back at the week that was and a look ahead to the coming week.
BASEBALL
The Eagles scored a huge victory on Wednesday, knocking off previously undefeated . The win avenged a 7-1 loss in the season opener and helped the team build momentum which it carried over in a 15-3 defeat of Overbrook. West Deptford is now 7-4 and has a busy schedule ahead with conference games Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

GOLF
The Eagles had a winning week, going 3-1, but could not get past conference favorite Haddonfield on Tuesday, falling 180-161. The 180 score was, however, good enough to defeat Haddon Heights in the tri-match. Jordan Haines had the low round of the week, shooting a 39, while Kevin Brockway carded a 40 and Zach Vorndran had a 43.
BOYS' TENNIS
The boys were able to shrug off a 5-0 loss to Haddonfield and win 3-2 matches against Collingswood and Overbook to raise the team’s record to 7-3. The decisive point against Overbrook came from the first doubles team of Mike McKendry and Jimmy Albert, who lost the first set 6-7 (2-7), but responded two win the next two sets, 6-4, 6-2.
BOYS' TRACK
The Eagles continued their hot start by dominating Haddon Township, 92-48, on Tuesday. Rob Fearon and Ferrell Cooper each had huge days. Fearon finished first in the 100, 200 and triple jump, while Ferrell Cooper won the 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles, long jump and ran a leg of the winning 4x400 team. West Deptford also dominated in the field, where Matt Moser (javelin), Anthony Prate (discus) and Nick Pulli (shot put) all placed first.
GIRLS' TRACK
The girls' track team will compete in a meet at Gateway on Tuesday at 3:45, in what should be a good tune-up for one of the more unique track events of the year-the Rowan Open, which takes place on Friday.
GIRLS' LACROSSE
By recording wins over Kingsway and Sterling, the girls' lacrosse team has already matched its win total from a year ago. The back-to-back wins (followed by a loss to Clearview) have the Eagles at 4-7. Jenna Grady had a huge performance against Sterling, netting seven goals, and also scored a pair against Kingsway. Rachel Krott have five goals over the same span.
BOYS' LACROSSE
Eric Gendron had a seven-goal, two-assist performance to lead the West Deptford High School boys' lacrosse team to a 15-10 win over Gloucester Catholic on Tuesday. Nick Reardon added three goals and five assists as the Eagles improved to 6-3.
THIS WEEK
Several West Deptford teams will compete under the lights this week, which should lead to plenty of drama. The baseball team takes on Haddonfield tonight and Haddon Township Wednesday, with both games at 7 p.m. at Union Field. On Tuesday, they have a 6 p.m. game at Pitman.
The boy's and girls' lacrosse teams also have a pair of night games, as the girls host Collingswood at 6 p.m. and the boys host Holy Cross at 8 p.m. Then on Wednesday, the boys host Bishop Eustace at 6 p.m. and the girls host Kingsway at 8 p.m.
Also of note this week is the Carl Arena Tournament, which will be played at RiverWinds for the first time. The West Deptford golfers should have a slight edge over the competition, having played the difficult course so many times previously.
