Sullivan, Knoblock Put Pen to Paper on National Signing Day

West Deptford's Megan Sullivan (Temple) and Megan Knoblock (Towson) will continue their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level.

While many kids, and even adults, cringe at the thought of going to the dentist, West Deptford senior Megan Sullivan doesn't have any anxiety come checkup time. Even as a kid, the dentist wasn't a scary place for her to visit.

For her, the experience was often a positive one and now she wants to return the favor.

“When I was growing up I had really bad teeth,” said Sullivan, with a laugh. “The orthodontist gave me confidence and it’s something I want to be able to do. I want to make other people feel as confident as I do.”

Sullivan signed her letter of intent to Temple University Wednesday morning, during National Signing Day. At Temple, she will study biology in pursuit of a career as an orthodontist. She'll also continue her athletic career on the soccer team.

“They have a really good dental school for grad students and on the campus there is just always something going on,” Sullivan said. “It’s really lively and it’s just so easy to fit in there.”

Sullivan said she didn’t limit her college search to local schools, but once she checked out Temple—on her father's request—the decision to go to school in the city was too good to pass up.

“I didn’t even want to visit Temple and my dad said we should visit there, and honestly, I fell in love when I got there,” Sullivan said. “I’m really excited about choosing this school because I really wanted to go to a big school. It met everything that I could have ever dreamed up. I really like the atmosphere in the city and the girls on the team are really nice.”

Megan Knoblock knows exactly how Sullivan feels. Knoblock—who signed a letter of intent for Towson University—said her decision was an easy one once she saw what the school had to offer.

“In the end, it’s the place that felt most like home to me when I visited,” said Knoblock. “I didn’t think I would get one of those feelings where it’s like ‘this is the place for me,’ but that’s the feeling that I got. … Basically as soon as I pulled up and saw the campus from a distance I knew that (Towson) was where I wanted to go.”

Knoblock plans to major in exercise science on her way to becoming a strength and conditioning coach. She will also continue her athletic career with the cross-country and track programs.

“I started (searching for schools) at the beginning of this year and I sort of narrowed it down to which schools had Division 1 track and field programs and a great exercise science program and that was the place that matched,” said Knoblock.

Knoblock, who will focus on the one-mile and two-mile, stopped playing basketball after her junior year and picked up indoor track to help improve her times. She will compete at the NJSIAA Sectionals Thursday and then turn her focus to the spring season.

Said Knoblock: "I’m hoping to lower my times even more so I can better prepare myself for Division 1 track and field."
