WDHS Sports Week In Review/Preview: the Winter Playoff Push

The wrestling team captured a division title, while the boys' basketball team has a big week ahead.

Last week was a monumental one for the wrestling team which won its first division title since 1978, beating Haddonfield in the process. The Eagles are still undefeated entering a showdown of Group 2 powers tonight against Clayton.

Meanwhile, it’s do or die for the boys’ basketball team this week, as it needs to go 2-1 to be at .500 for Friday’s NJSIAA postseason cutoff date.

Below, is a look back at the week that was, as well as a glimpse at this week’s schedule.

WRESTLING

It was a huge week for the Eagles, who snapped a pair of streaks Friday. With a victory over Haddonfield, West Deptford snapped a decade-plus slide against the Bulldawgs while also claiming their . Rory Bonner had the night’s most glorified win, pinning his opponent in the second period in the final bout of a 36-28 victory.

As if winning the division wasn’t enough of an accomplishment, less than 24 hours later, the against Egg Harbor Township, Eastern and Pennsauken to run their record to 18-0. West Deptford will likely be a No. 3 seed in the , which begins next week.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

It was a rough week for Don Clark’s bunch, which went 0-3 to drop a game under .500. The Eagles fell to Paulsboro, Overbrook and Wall Township. The was eerily familiar in a painful way, as in both meetings between the teams, the Eagles lead most of the way, only to stumble down the stretch. At 7-8, West Deptford must win two of its three  games this week to automatically qualify for the postseason.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

The girls’ went 1-1 last week, dropping a nail-biter to Paulsboro (50-47), then bounced back with a . West Deptford led Overbrook 22-15 after the first quarter, then blew the game wide open with a 19-0 second quarter. Danielle McKeown finished with a team-high 16 points, while Megan Kirschling and Tarryn Bundy had 14 and 10, respectively.

BOWLING

The boys’ team picked up a 4-0 win over Pennsauken Tech on Tuesday. Ryan Bilger led the way with a 510 in a three-game series, highlighted by games of 176 and 173. Nick Grassi also had a solid day at the lanes, bowling a high-game of 193.

The girls’ team also scored a 4-0 win over Pennsauken Tech. As has been the case all season, it was Morgan Brown leading the way. Brown bowled over 610 pins, with a high-game of 257. Steph Fanelli had a high-game of 148 and finished second on the team with a total of 361 pins.

THIS WEEK

–The wrestling team will once again be put to the test as it takes on Clayton/Glassboro (18-1) at home, tonight, at 7 p.m.

–The boys’ basketball team takes on King's Christian and Haddonfield over the next two days. If it splits, it will need a win at home Thursday against Audubon, which the boys trounced in the second game of the season, to be at .500 for Friday’s playoff cutoff.

–The girls’ basketball team looks to make it a season sweep of Haddonfield when it hosts the rival Bulldawgs at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

–The bowling teams will be in action three times this week, starting today at Deptford.

–The swim team hosts Haddon Heights Tuesday at RiverWinds.
