WDHS Sports Week In Review/Preview: Individual Glory

The wrestling team competed in the playoffs, Samantha Budd won a winter track title and Megan Kirschling chose a college in a busy week of action.

With the winter season winding down, playoffs and championships were the focus last week. The wrestling team won a quarterfinal thriller, then fell in the semifinals. The basketball teams found out their playoff seeds and Samantha Budd outlasted the pack to win a Group 2 title in the 800.

Also last week, Megan Kirschling signed a letter of intent to attend Elon University.

All that and more can be found below as we take a look back at the week that was in West Deptford athletics.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

West Deptford used a second-half surge to steal a 38-35 win from Timber Creek in the consolation game of the South Jersey Invitational Sunday. West Deptford trailed by 13 at the half, but outscored the Chargers, 27-11, over the final two quarters to pull out the win. Megan Kirschling and Danielle McKeown led the way offensively, scoring 12 and 11, respectively.

Earlier in the week, the Eagles scored a dramatic 45-43 non-conference win over Woodstown. West Deptford trailed by one with 15 seconds left when Kirschling had a steal and a layup to put her team in front—reminiscent of the play she had in a win over Haddonfield earlier this season. Megan Knoblock added a free throw to get to the final margin.

Also last week, the Eagles found out they will be a No. 7 seed in the Group 2 Tournament. West Deptford will host No. 10 Deptford, Tuesday, Feb. 28.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

The Eagles went 2-1 on the week, culminating in a 62-33 whitewash of Bordentown. The game was tied at 21-all at the half, but West Deptford held Bordentown to just 12 second-half points to run away with the win, highlighted by a 26-6 third quarter. Kyle Redrow led the way with a game-high 16 points. The Eagles also downed Collingswood, 60-45, thanks to 17 points from Tom Jakubowski and 16 from Tim Fair.

The only setback came against Haddon Heights, 55-42. The loss was an upgrade from the 30-point loss West Deptford suffered to their Liberty Division rival earlier this year.

Also last week, the team found out it will be a No. 12 seed in the Group 2 playoffs and will take on No. 5 Barnegat. The game is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 28.

WRESTLING

The Eagles saw their postseason run come to an end to Buena in the semifinals for the second-consecutive year. Unlike last year's match which came down to the final bout, the result was never in doubt as the No. 2 Chiefs led from start to finish in a 45-18 victory. Earlier in the week, No. 3 West Deptford scored a 34-27 win over Barnegat that came down to the wire.

The wrestling season now shifts to an individual focus with the District 29 Tournament beginning Friday, at Gloucester County College. Check back later in the week to find out where the local wrestlers are seeded.

SWIMMING

The swim team lost a pair of contests last week, falling to Audubon (105-76) and Cumberland (98-88). Against the Colts, Phil Palmer (500 freestyle), John Meagher (100 breaststroke) and Frank Bilodeau (100 backstroke) had first place finishes.

WINTER TRACK

Samantha Budd took home a South Jersey Group 2 title at the NJSIAA Sectional Championships last week. Budd ran a 2:21.84, beating out Delsea’s Celine Mazzi (2:22.24) and Paige Senatore (2:28.02) to win the title.

On the boys’ side, Ray Parsons, who was 9th in the 3200, and Leo Impagliazzo, who was 9th in the 800, were the highest-placing runners on the day.
