WDHS Girls' Soccer Wastes No Time in Opening Victory

West Deptford captain Tarryn Bundy scored less than 20 seconds into the Eagles' 8-1 win against Overbrook.

After its season opener last Thursday was rained out, the girls’ soccer team had to wait a little longer than they had hoped to begin their reign as Colonial Conference Liberty Division champions.

Once the season did finally get underway on Tuesday, the team didn’t have to wait long at all before it had its first goal.

Senior Tarryn Bundy scored less than 20 seconds into the Eagles' contest with division foe Overbrook, setting the tone for a 8-1 victory.

“We thought we needed to get the early lead so we could get everyone in and work on our first-touches, our possession game, our crosses and just have a good game.” said Bundy, a captain.

Bundy’s goal came shortly after the kickoff as she found herself open near the center of the net.

“I was open, had the open lane and just shot it in,” Bundy said.

From there, the rout was on.

Jamie Cary, Payton McGinniss, Paige Paratore, Megan Sullivan, Shannon Neary and Megan Knoblock also found the net in a game that saw the Eagles clear out the bench. West Deptford led 5-1 midway through the first half, before pulling the offense back to work on passing drills.

Head coach Veronica McGinniss was happy with the way her team opened, even if they didn’t face much resistance. It’s unlikely Tuesday’s game will be the only lopsided contest for West Deptford. The Eagles have 19 players back form last season’s squad that steamrolled the conference to the tune of a 15-0-1 record.

“It’s always a nice season opener when you get a couple of goals in the net and build the confidence up, but more importantly to get everyone some time on the field so they can get used to playing in a game situation as opposed to practice,” said McGinniss, in her second season.

McGinniss has no worries of the team coming into this season content. Despite the delayed start to meaningful games, the energy level remained high around the squad.

“They have always been excited, it’s just been a long preseason,” McGinniss said. “We had a extra week of preseason, but we mixed it up and added some different stuff just to keep the cardio up keep them on their toes.”

Bundy said the team is as hungry as ever.

“It wasn’t as hard as you would think,” Bundy said of staying motivated. “Most of the varsity players were here last year, so they know how important this season is. Everybody was motivated to come back because they knew who they had to beat.

"Everybody is willing to work hard for that good season again.”
