WDHS Sports Week In Review/Preview: Wrestling Remains Dominant

Another perfect week for the wrestling team highlights our look back at the last seven days of athletic action at West Deptford High School.

With each passing week, the success of the wrestling team becomes more impressive. The Eagles remained perfect last week, bolstering their place in polls throughout the state. It was an up-and-down week for the rest of the athletic program.

Below, is a look back at the week that was, as well as a glance at this week’s schedule.

WRESTLING

With each test is passes, the wrestling team continues to demonstrate that it belongs among the top teams in South Jersey. The Eagles brought their win total to 13 over the weekend, coming back to Friday, before beating Pennsville and Deptford Saturday.

West Deptford scored six straight wins, starting with Tyler Kaminsky at 113 pounds, with three pins and a technical fall in that mix, to seal the 35-29 win over Pennsville. Kaminski, Rory Bonner, Cody Eastlack, Griffin Bonner, Evan Zuzulock, Christian Terinoni and Eugene Marshall each recorded a pin in a 49-22 win over Deptford.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

The Eagles were able to shake off a lopsided defeat at the hands of Sterling and respond with a 35-24 win over Kingsway, Saturday. Tarryn Bundy and Danielle McKeown led the way offensively with 10 points each. West Deptford trailed 14-10 after the first quarter, but put on a the rest of the way, limiting the Dragons to 10 points the rest of the game. The game also raised money and awareness for a .

McKeown had a big game earlier in the week as she scored a season-high 23 points in a 59-44 win over Haddon Heights.

BOYS' BASEKTBALL

It was a rough week for the boys’ basketball team, which was handed an 83-53 loss by Haddon Heights and was tripped up in a 60-57 loss to Sterling. The news wasn’t all bad though, as West Deptford was able to top its win total from all of last year with a 62-30 beatdown of Maple Shade. The Eagles jumped out to a 19-4 lead and never looked back. Tim Fair led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points. Justin Hansen, who continues to , had 11.

SWIMMING

The swim team dropped a 107-76 decision to Haddon Township to fall to 3-4. Zoe Shannon continued her successful season on the board, wining the diving event, while MacKenna Angert took first in the 100 backstroke at 1:03.87.

BOWLING

The Eagles scooped up a 3-1 win over Gloucester Tech on Thursday. Morgan Brown was again the high roller with 508 pins, but fresh on her heels was Steph Fanelli, who knocked down 502 in a three-game series.

The girls are holding strong at No. 19 in the NJ.com top 20 rankings.

It was a tough week for the boys, who dropped matches to Seneca, Gloucester City and Gloucester Tech. Ryan Bliger was the high scorer against Tech, bowling over 495 pins. Matt Novak was a close second with 489.

THIS WEEK

–The wrestling team will be tested this week with an away match against Haddon Township Wednesday and a home match against Haddonfield Friday.

–The bowling teams host Penn Tech Tuesday.

–The throwers compete in the Colonial Conference Shot Put Series Wednesday.

–The boys’ basketball team finally gets to taste some home cooking when it hosts Paulsboro Tuesday and Overbrook Thursday.

–The girls’ basketball team now starts a long stretch of road games. It will travel to face Paulsboro Tuesday and Overbrook Thursday.
