WDHS Sports: Week In Review/Preview

Playoff brackets for girls' soccer, boys' soccer and field hockey will be released this week.

Last week saw the NJSIAA playoff cutoff date come and go as the season begins to wind down. The field hockey, girls’ soccer and boys’ soccer teams will all find out their playoff schedule in the coming days when the brackets are released. Meanwhile, the tennis team finished its season on a positive note, the football team won big and the cross country program had a tremendous performance at Pennypacker Park.

Below is a look back at the week that was in athletics, as well as a glimpse at this week’s schedule.

GIRLS TENNIS

A bumpy season came to a close on a positive note for the Eagles, who wrapped up their year with a 4-1 win over Haddon Heights. Marthalyn Johnson, Jaelynne King and Michelle Bower each won in two sets at singles, while the first doubles team of Elaine Dehart and Katie Schober won also won in straight sets. The game not only marked the end of the Eagles’ season, but also of King’s high school tennis career. King, a three-year captain, was the lone senior varsity starter.

BOYS' SOCCER

It was a slow week for the boys, as it played just once thanks to a rainout. The Eagles played to a 2-2 tie with Haddon Heights on Monday, marking the second time this season they tied the Garnets. Tim Krott and Kyle Redrow scored for West Deptford, who reached the playoff cutoff date at 9-5-2.

GIRLS' SOCCER

The Eagles went 1-1 on the week, with a 9-0 win over Lindenwold following a 3-2 loss against Haddon Heights. Tarryn Bundy and Megan Sullivan scored in the loss. West Deptford shared the wealth against Lindenwold with seven players finding the back of the net, led by Megan Kirschling and Tina Furfari, who each scored twice. The Eagles reached the cutoff date at 11-4 and should be hosting a playoff game.

FIELD HOCKEY

As a team heads towards the playoffs it wants to be playing at its best, and that’s exactly what the Eagles are doing. West Deptford went 3-0 on the week by outscoring Haddon Township, Lindenwold and Woodbury by a combined total of 24-2. Amanda Hojnowski led the way with seven goals over that span, while Sydney Ponto had four. The win against the Hawks was officially the . The Eagles should also be looking at a home playoff game when the seedings are released.

CROSS COUNTRY

Raymond Parsons and Millie Kipp had standout performances at the at Pennypacker on Thursday. Kipp took third place overall, while Parsons took seventh. Each runner, along with Samantha Budd, earned First-Team All-Conference honors. The race was extremely fast, as everyone on the West Deptford roster recorded recorded a personal record. The two teams will now use the next two weeks to prepare for the sectional championships.

FOOTBALL

One would be hard-pressed to find anything wrong with the way the Eagles played Friday night in a . Gerald Towns led the way with four touchdowns as West Deptford gashed the Haddon Township defense with long run after long run. The defense was equally as good, recording its second-straight shutout. The unit has now held the opposition off the board for 11-consecutive quarters.

THIS WEEK

This week’s schedule will not be completely known until the playoff brackets are released, but:

–The girls’ soccer team has a trio of home soccer game as it hosts Sterling (today), Woodbury (Tuesday) and Kingsway (Thursday).

–The boys’ soccer team has road contests against Sterling (today) and Woodbury (Tuesday).

–The field hockey team wraps up its regular season today at home against Haddon Heights.

–The football team travels to take on Collingswood on Friday at 7 p.m.
