WDHS Sports: Week In Review/Preview

Four teams saw their season come to an end last week, while the football team marched on.

The last seven days at brought with it closing time for the girls’ soccer, field hockey and cross country seasons. Each team had great success during the regular season and had extended postseason runs. Now, the football team is all that remains of the fall sports.

Below, is a look back at the week that was in West Deptford athletics.

The first round of the playoffs went about as well as anyone wearing green and white could have hoped, as, 43-0. The defense again could not be penetrated, as it ran its shutout streak to five games and 23 quarters overall. West Deptford set the tone from the game’s first snap, where the Eagles forced a Pemberton fumble and took over on the 11.

Two plays later, Connor Smith had the first touchdown for the Eagles on a 10-yard carry.

With the win, West Deptford advanced to the Group 2 semifinals. It will host No. 3 Barnegat Friday.

CROSS-COUNTRY

The boys’ and girls’ teams got a chance to run against the best the state has to offer on Saturday at the Group Championships in Holmdel. The Eagles earned that honor by placing in the top five of the sectional championships the prior week.

Raymond Parsons was the top West Deptford boys' finisher, placing 29th in a time of 17:19. Kevin Cianfarini was next, crossing the line in 72nd.

On the girls’ side, Samantha Budd was the top local finisher, taking 41st in 21:10. Millie Kipp was the second West Deptford finisher, at 86th.

GIRLS' SOCCER

Haddonfield again proved to be a thorn in the Eagles’ side as the in the Group 2 semifinals, 1-0. The loss was the third this season by the Eagles against their rival. In each case, West Deptford had 50 percent or better of the possession, but could not find an answer to Haddonfield’s bunker defense. The Eagles’ best chance came in the first half when Paige Paratore released a shot from the top of the 18 that rung off the crossbar.

FIELD HOCKEY

It was more of the same in the field hockey Group 2 finals, as , in a back-and-forth game. Just like with girls’ soccer, the Bulldawgs won all three meetings, with each one decided by a single goal. It also marked the second-straight year the Bulldawgs denied the Eagles a Group 2 title.
