WDHS Sports: Week In Review/Preview

A look back at a week of playoff action at West Deptford High School.

The last seven days have been action-packed for the athletic program as the playoffs got underway for three teams. The week’s activities set up two premier Haddonfield-West Deptford games this week. The cross country teams also achieved a goal and the football team continued its shutout streak.

Here's our look back at the week that was in West Deptford athletics, as well as a glimpse at this week’s schedule.

GIRLS SOCCER

All eyes will be on the girls’ soccer team today as the No. 4 Eagles take on No. 1 Haddonfield . The Eagles earned the right to take on the Bulldawgs by recording lopsided wins against Manchester and Buena. Haddonfield beat the girls twice in the regular season, each time by a single goal.

The Eagles’ in one of the most frustrating ways possible last week as the boys soccer team was eliminated from the Group 2 playoffs by way of penalty kicks. West Deptford saw a 2-0 lead against Middle Township transform into a 2-2 tie, then fell 4-3 in the shootout.

FOOTBALL

Shutouts have become commonplace for the Eagles lately, and that trend continued on Saturday when West Deptford dominated Overbrook, 65-0. The shutout brought the without allowing a score.

On offense, Josh Cornelius and Nate Wadding each rushed for a pair of scores, while Gerald Towns, Brandon Holmes and Shai Mumford all reached the end zone.

Eagles defensive lineman Nick Pulli recovered a fumble in the end zone for another score, and kick returner Arrin Bundy raced 60 yards to round out West Deptford's scoring on the afternoon.

The Eagles open the playoffs on at home Friday night as the No. 2 seed, and will take on against No. 7 Pemberton (4-4).

FIELD HOCKEY

The playoffs are the perfect time for a team to be , and the Eagles are doing exactly that. No. 3 West Deptford outscored its opponents 12-0 in a pair of playoff wins and are set to take on Haddonfield for the Group 2 Tuesday. The Bulldawgs have had the Eagles’ number this season, winning both contests, but with the way West Deptford has played of late, this game has the makings of a classic.

CROSS COUNTRY

The boys’ and girls’ cross country teams each achieved a preseason goal on Saturday when they . The girls’ claimed fourth place overall and were led by Millie Kipp and Samantha Budd, who finished third and fourth, respectively at the sectional meet. Ray Parsons led the boys, who took fifth in Group 2. Both teams will head to Holmdel Park next weekend for a shot at qualifying for the Meet of Champions.

THIS WEEK

–The girls’ soccer team travels to face Haddonfield for a Group 2 semifinal, today at 2 p.m.

- The field hockey team travels to face Haddonfield for the Group 2 championship, Tuesday at 2 p.m.

–The football teams hosts Pemberton in the first round of the playoffs, Friday at 7 p.m.
