WDHS Sports: Week In Review/Preview: Basketball Tunes Up for Playoffs

Plus Tyler Kaminski win the first Region 8 title for the school in 11 years.

It was quite the week at , and this week figures to be no different. Last week, Tyler Kaminski became the first Eagles’ wrestler to earn a Region 8 title in 11 years, Tom Jakubowski topped 1,000 points for his career, and the girls’ basketball team stretched its winning streak to six games.

This week will see a pair of Eagles compete at the state wrestling tournament and the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams compete in the Group 2 playoffs.

Below is a look back at the week that was in West Deptford athletics, as well as a glimpse at this week’s schedule.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

A season full of major accomplishments for the Eagles reaches its apex on Tuesday, as the team competes in a playoff game for the first time in four years.

No. 12 West Deptford will be taking on a Barnegat team that is very much a mystery. No. 5 Barnegat (13-8) plays out of the Shore Conference and has scored over 70 three times this season, but has also had games of 24 and 32 points. The team has had a sub. 500 record since the playoff cutoff date a couple of weeks ago, while the Eagles have won four-of-six.

West Deptford’s latest win came Thursday, 58-39, over Haddon Township. Tommy Jakubowski scored a game-high 21 points, while point guard Justin Hansen from illness to score 15. Two days later Jakubowski crossed the barrier in a loss to Holy Cross.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

No team is hotter entering the Group 2 playoffs than the Eagles, who have won six-straight games and nine-out-of-10, on their way to already breaking the school record for wins in a season. No. 7 West Deptford is set to host No. 10 Deptford, Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The game may not be a close as the seeds may indicate. While West Deptford has been on fire over the last month, Deptford has gone in the other direction. The Spartans (10-11) are reeling after going 0-3 last week against Woodbury, Williamstown and Gloucester City.

Last week, West Deptford scored a 48-35 win over Haddon Township—thanks to —and a , fueled by 17 points from Megan Kirschling.

WRESTLING

Someone forgot to tell West Deptford junior Tyler Kaminski that No. 6 seeds are not supposed to win region titles. The 113-pounder defeated the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 seeds on his way to becoming West Deptford’s Kaminski earned a trip to Atlantic City for the state tournament, which begins Friday. He will be joined by Rory Bonner, who placed third at 182.

The rest of the Eagles saw their season come to an end last season at various stages of the tournament.

THIS WEEK

–The boys’ basketball team travels to face Barnegat, Tuesday, at 6:30 p.m.

–The girls’ basketball teams is home against Deptford, Tuesday, at 7 p.m.

–If either team wins their first playoff game, they will see second-round action on Thursday.

–The three-day state wrestling tournament begins Friday at Atlantic City.
