WDHS Sports Week In Review/Preview: Better Than Expected

Big wins by the softball and girls' lacrosse teams highlight our look back at a busy week in West Deptford athletics.

Exceeding expectations has been the early theme around the athletic complex.

Despite being low on numbers and experience, both the girls’ lacrosse and softball teams are off to blazing starts. Also starting better than expected is the boys’ lacrosse team, which is winning despite the loss of a senior captain. Meanwhile, the golf team remains undefeated and the West Deptford girls track team got several standout performances at the West Deptford Relays.

Below is a look back at the week that was in local athletics, as well as a glimpse at this week’s schedule.

BASEBALL

The Eagles have their backs against the wall after going 0-2 for the second-straight week to start the season. West Deptford’s losses came against a pair of conference rivals as it was defeated by Gateway, 5-4, and Haddonfield, 3-1. Through the first four games the issue has been clear for the team: It is leaving too many . In the Eagles’ loss to the Bulldawgs, the team left eight runners on, including leaving the bases loaded twice.

SOFTBALL

It has been a great start to the season for the softball team, which is now 4-1 after a pair of blowout wins last week. The Eagles overwhelmed Gateway, 14-1, and then continued to pepper the ball two days later in a 15-4 win over Haddonfield. Sydney Ponto had a monster game against the Bulldawgs, going 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and four runs. Meanwhile, Marissa Linquist pitched all seven innings, racking up five strikeouts.

GOLF

Kevin Brockway was par for the course last week—literally. The senior golfer shot an even-par 36 Tuesday in the Eagles’ 168-215 win over Gateway. Brockway was able to shoot the round despite wind gusts that reached 32 miles per hour on the afternoon. Brockway also led the team with a 39 in a 173-204 win over Audubon, as the Eagles improved their undefeated record to 4-0.

GIRLS' LACROSSE

The Eagles continue to surpass expectations, going 3-for-3 on the week to improve to 4-1 on the young season. Their week included a pair of one-goal thrillers.

The team started its week by pulling out a 10-9 win over Collingswood, thanks to five goals from Rachel Krott.

Against Woodstown, The Eagles opened with seven unanswered goals and built an 11-1 lead at halftime, before cruising in the second half to a 17-4 win. Krott and Cara Spector scored four times each, while Jess Hill and Emily Whalin each had a hat trick for the Eagles.

West Deptford capped its week with a 14-13 win over Cherry Hill East. The game lasted into the third overtime, when Krott was able to end it with a goal 1:13 into the session. Krott finished with three goals, as did Whalin, Hill and Gabby Minnite.

BOYS' LACROSSE

A to senior captain Nick Reardon was a major blow to the team’s aspirations, yet it has not kept the team from getting off to a 3-1 start. West Deptford got a major-league effort in net from first-year goalie junior Brendan Gill in a 16-2 win over Holy Cross, while Mike Reardon had four goals and three assists.

BOYS' TENNIS

West Deptford came close to earning its first win of the season, but came a point shy in a 3-2 loss to Collingswood. Kai Narayanan got the Eagles' first win at singles all season, defeating Peter Siv, 7-6 (7-0), 6-2.

The match came down to first doubles, though, where Collingswood’s Sam Harris and Pat Rader were able to overcome losing the first set to close out West Deptford’s Jimmy Albert and Ethan Nicholas, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.

The team also suffered a and a 5-0 decision to Haddon Township and appears on its way to its first losing season in a decade.

GIRLS' TRACK

As expected, the West Deptford Relays were a huge success this weekend, as over 50 teams came out for the girls-only event. Megan Kirschling was the star of the day, and was selected as the . Meanwhile, the 4x1600 team set a .

In conference action, Claudia Theriault won the pole vault and freshman Nicole Pinto won the 200 as the Eagles knocked off Haddon Township, 75-65, but lost to Haddonfield, 84-56, to move to 3-1 on the season.

BOYS' TRACK

West Deptford got a split against a pair of conference rivals Wednesday,, beating Haddonfield, 93-45, but losing to Haddon Township, 89-51. Kevin Cianfarini, who won the 400, and Connor Smith, who clocked 11.1 seconds to win the 100 meters, were the Eagles' top racers on the day.

On Saturday the field team as Nick Pulli and Todd Jarrell won the discus and shot put at the Moorestown Relays.

THIS WEEK

–The baseball team looks to turn around its season today as it takes on Collingswood. The contest against the Panthers will be the first of three-straight games and four in five days.

–The softball team will also be busy with four games this week, starting with Collingswood today.

–The girls’ lacrosse team has a home-and-home series with Kingsway, traveling to take on the Dragons Monday, before facing them at home, Wednesday.

–The boys’ and girls’ track teams compete in a tri-meet with Collingswood and Lindenwold Tuesday.

–The golf team will have its undefeated record put to the test as it faces perennial conference favorite Haddonfield, Thursday.
