WDHS Sports: Week In Review/Preview

A look back at the week that was in West Deptford sports.

The winter season is off to a strong start at , where the wrestling, swimming and boys’ and girls’ basketball teams wasted no time putting checks in the win column. The teams will also see plenty of action over winter break as holiday tournaments fill up the schedule.

Below is a look back at the week that was, and a glimpse at this week’s schedule.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

The Eagles were just moments away from a 3-0 start, but had to settle for 2-1 after the squad fell 55-49 to Overbrook. The Eagles led by eight with four minutes left, and the game was tied in the final minute, but turnovers proved costly in the loss. Tom Jakubowski led West Deptford with 14 points.

GIRLS' BASKTEBALL

West Deptford is out of the gates at 2-1 after consecutive blowout wins over Schalick and Overbrook. Meghan Kirschling scored 14 points and Tarryn Bundy had eight Tuesday to lead West Deptford to a 44-13 win against Overbrook. Meanwhile, Megan Knoblock continues to as the team’s starting point guard.

WRESTLING

West Deptford opened up its regular season with a landslide win over Lindewold, 61-18, in a match that lasted only 44 minutes. The Eagles recorded eight pins, including one by freshman Griffin Bonner, who is hoping to that the family name has laid on him.

SWIMMING

The West Deptford swim team has performed well in the early stages of the season. The squad picked up a 130-55 win over Pitman last week. John Meagher recorded wins in the 100 free and 100 breast and was a part of the winning 200 medley relay team. Frank Bilodeau won the 500 free and was on two winning relay teams, while MacKenna Angert won the 100 back and was on the winning 400 free team.

BOWLING

Morgan Brown  afternoon, opening with a 248 and following it with a 247 and a 266, to pace the Eagles girls' squad to an easy win over Lindenwold.

THIS WEEK

–The boys’ basketball team Monday. The Eagles are back in action for the fifth-place game today, and the tournament concludes on Thursday.

–The girls’ basketball team takes on Gloucester Catholic in the first round of the Gloucester Catholic Christmas Tournament, Tuesday at 4 p.m. The tournament concludes on Wednesday.

–Wrestling travels to Egg Harbor Township to compete in the EHT tournament Thursday at 9 a.m.

–The winter track team will compete in the SJTCA Meet Thursday at 9 a.m.
