WDHS Sports Week in Review/Preview: Girls' Basketball, Wrestling Rolling

Teams continue to surpass expectations at West Deptford this winter.

The wins keep coming for the girls’ basketball and wrestling teams. Each program went undefeated on the week, while the boys’ basketball and swimming teams also picked up a win each.

We get into all that below, as well get you a glimpse into this week’s schedule.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

It was a big week for the Eagles, who went 2-0, highlighted by a . Megan Kirschling had the game's biggest play, recording a steal and taking the ball down the court for the game-winning layup with 15 seconds left in regulation. Kirschling was force in the paint, netting 22 points.

Earlier in the week West Deptford steamrolled rival Gateway, 70-28. Tarryn Bundy scored a game-high 19 points, as West Deptford sprinted out to a 21-2 lead.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

It was an up-and-down week for Eagles, who got a landslide victory over Gateway, 62-39, before losing to Haddonfield, 76-34. In the win over the Gators, four players scored in double figures, led by Tim Fair with 14 points and Tom Jakubowski, who had 12.

The loss to Haddonfield was lopsided, but should as the Bulldawgs have been rolling just about every team they have faced this season.

WRESTLING

West Deptford continued its strong start to the 2011-12 season with a on Saturday. Gerald (Towns) Owens, Dan Gibson and Mark Fischer each recorded a pair of pins. Add those to a midweek win over Overbook, and the Eagles are 4-0 in a year many expected them to go through some growing pains.

SWIMMING

West Deptford improved to 3-1 with a 123-53 win over Pemberton Tuesday.

First-place finishers for the Eagles included Phil Palmer (200 free), Frank Bilodeau (50 free), Cara Spector (diving), Jack Baldwin (100 fly), MacKenna Angert (100 back), John Meagher (100 breast). West Deptford also won the 200 medley and 400 free relays.

WINTER TRACK

The second South Jersey meet of the season saw some strong performances from both the West Deptford girls' and boys' squads.

Samantha Budd was tops among the girls, scoring two second-place finishes. Budd ran a 1:03.16 in the 400 and a 5:35.59 in the 1600, and a pair of Eagles weren't far behind in each race: Nicole Pinto was 16th in the 400, running 1:09.92, and Karen Knoblock was ninth in the 1600, posting a 6:18.64.

In the girls' shot put, Marthalyn Johnson and Kiyah Owens threw 28-9.25 and 28-1.75 respectively to finish 10th and 11th individually and fifth as a relay team.

On the boys' side, Nick Pulli, who was fourth in the shot put, was the highest individual finisher. Other top finishers for the Eagles included Ray Parsons (seventh) and Evan Stigale (12th) in the 1600, and Shai Mumford, who was ninth in the 55-meter sprint.

The relay teams were solid, with the boys' sprint medley coming in third, and the boys' distance medley relay placing 18th.

THIS WEEK

–The wrestling team will be busy, as it takes on Sterling Monday, Haddon Heights Wednesday and will compete in a quad match on Saturday.

–The boys’ and girls’ bowling teams will be in action today as they take on Cherry Hill West at 3:30 p.m.

–The boys’ basketball team hits the road for a couple of weeks, starting Tuesday at Collingswood.

–The girls’ basketball team hosts Collingswood Tuesday, and Haddon Township Thursday.

–The boys’ and girls’ swim teams take on Gateway/Woodbury Tuesday at 4 p.m.

–The winter track program continues its season in a SJTCA meet on Tuesday.
