WDHS Sports Week in Review/Preview: Reardon Returns in Grand Fashion

Last week saw the return of the boys’ lacrosse team’s leader, a solid performance by Kevin Brockway at the Carl Arena/Al Rifkin Memorial Tournament, and a walk-off win by the baseball team. Oh, and two players reached career milestones. One can only imagine what will happen this week as the NJSIAA playoff cutoff dates arrive.

Below is a look back at the week that was in sports, as well as a glimpse at this week’s schedule.

BOYS' LACROSSE

After separating his shoulder during a fall in the preseason, Nick Reardon was not expected to be back of the field for the Eagles this season. However, after over a month of intense rehab, he made his return last week, scoring two goals against Bishop Eustace to for his career.

Reardon showed no signs of the injury on goal No. 100, swirling around the back of the cage before firing a shot from the left side into the back of the net, giving the Eagles the lead in a 9-7 win.

One day later it was Nick’s younger brother, Mike, who did some big scoring. Mike Reardon and Zach Kaestner scored hat tricks to lead West Deptford past Clearview, 11-8.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

The Eagles were able to fight out of their worst stretch of the season, halting a four-game losing streak with a 16-8 win over Sterling. Maddie Waschko had a big performance, scoring five goals, while Emily Whalin had three goals and two assists. Gabby Minnite also added a hat trick.

Earlier in the week, West Deptford fell to Clearview, 14-4.

GOLF

Kevin Brockway , finishing 34th overall, to lead the Eagles at the annual Carl Arena/Al Rifkin Memorial Tournament at Running Deer in Pittgrove Township Wednesday.

Brockway was the low man on the Eagles by 10 strokes on the afternoon, as the team combined for a 364 and 19th place in the field. Richie Stolz and Matt Santarelli each fired a 93, and Ryan Henry carded a 95 to round out the Eagles’ scoring on the day.

The Eagles also went perfect on the week, setting up a critical rematch with Haddonfield on Wednesday. The Bulldawgs are a game up on the Eagles after defeating them earlier in the season.

BASEBALL

The Eagles head up to Cooperstown, NY, today in search of a resume-building win against Highland. The team went 2-1 last week, (4-3), falling to Audubon (7-2), and rebounding for a win against Penns Grove (4-3). The win over Penns Grove came at Campbell’s Field and featured a .

With his team trailing 3-2 against the Red Devils, Tom Jakubowski earned a leadoff walk and proceeded to steal second and third. He came around to score on a throwing error. Later that inning, Harry Sturgis connected on a game-winning single that plated Chris Dellaquilla.

Earlier in the week, Jakubowski against Overbrook on a line drive to deep left center.

SOFTBALL

West Deptford took on Haddonfield Wednesday in a game that helped for breast cancer. The Eagles’ Marissa Linquist crushed a three-run home run and the team jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings, in pulled away for a 10-2 win, in a pink-and-black-themed game. The win was the fifth in a row for West Deptford.

That streak came to an end Thursday, as Kingsway proved to be too tough in a 9-1 win over West Deptford.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Nicole Pinto, Megan Kirschling and Karen Knoblock all won multiple events, as West Deptford came within a win at the 4x400 relay of sweeping the track events in their 81-59 win over Sterling.

Kirschling took the high jump, triple jump and the 400 and 100 hurdles, Knoblock won the 1,600 and 3,200, and Pinto won all three sprints—the 100, 200 and 400—in the win. Samantha Budd added a first in the 800 and Claudia Theriault claimed victory in the long jump to round out the scoring for West Deptford, now 9-1 on the season.

Kirschling also had a solid performance at the Rowan Open Saturday, winning the elite high jump with a leap of 5-6.

BOYS' TRACK

Nick Pull heaved the shot 46-8.75 for ninth place, and Evan Stigale ran a 5:00.64 mile to place 19th among freshman at the South Jersey Open at Buena Regional High School Thursday night.

On Saturday, the boys got some big relay performances at the meet, winning the 4x1600 (Ray Parsons, Phil Palmer, Jonathon Ladner and Evan Stigale) and the 1600 sprint medley (Kyle Perry, Kevin Cianfarini, Leo Impagliazzo and Connor Smith), and getting a third in the 4x200 (Perry, Impagliazzo, Cianfarini and Smith).

BOYS’ TENNIS

After waiting three weeks to post its first victory, the tennis team wasted no time grabbing its second. The Eagles earned a 3-2 win at Collingswood last week. Steve Marchunt and Brian Keane won at singles, while Mike McKendry and R.J. Eckley won at doubles. Both Marchunt and the doubles team bounced back from first-set losses to score the victory.

THIS WEEK

–The baseball team gets to compete in Cooperstown, NY against Highland, today at 3 p.m.

–The track teams host a meet under the lights tonight against Overbrook, and will compete in the Gloucester County Meet at Delsea Wednesday.

–The golf team hosts Haddonfield Wednesday at RiverWinds.

–The tennis team looks to add to its win total against Lindenwold today and Woodbury Wednesday.

–The boys’ lacrosse team competes in the finals of the Gloucester County Cup Wednesday.

–The softball team takes on Lenape Friday in its final game before the playoff cutoff date.
