WDHS Sports: Week In Review/Preview

A look back at the week that was and ahead to what this week's athletic calendar holds.

Last week was not the kindest string of days for sports. The boys' and girls' soccer teams absorbed tough losses, as did the field hockey team. The tennis team also saw its home opener washed out.

On the flip side, the football team continued to dominate, while the boys' and girls' cross-country teams had a big effort against four conference foes.

Below is a look back at the week that was and a look ahead at what this week’s schedule offers.

BOYS' SOCCER

The resiliency and the character of the boys’ soccer team will again be tested this week, as the team looks to shake off another tough loss to a quality opponent. Fresh off a 4-1 win over Collingswood, the Eagles had undefeated Haddon Township on the ropes, leading 1-0 with less than 10 minutes to play. It wasn’t to be, though, as the Hawks rallied to score twice in the final minutes to. Earlier in the week West Deptford in a highly competitive and entertaining game.

West Deptford (3-4) will look to rebound this week beginning Tuesday at Haddon Heights.

GIRLS' SOCCER

Like the boys’ soccer team, the girls suffered a similarly frustrating defeat last week, , 1-0, in a game the Eagles controlled. The loss was the second consecutive for the team, but it did not discourage it, as West Deptford responded with a 7-0 win over Collingswood later in the week. The Eagles got goals from seven different players and led 6-0 at the half.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team was in action just once and the result was not favorable. , 2-1, to send the Eagles (3-2) to their second consecutive loss. Sydney Ponto scored on an assist from Rachel Krott and Dahlia VanDorick made nine saves in a game that was decided in overtime.

CROSS-COUNTRY

The week was a much happier one for the boys' and girls' cross-country teams. The on Tuesday to improve to 6-0 on the season and put themselves at the top of the Colonial Conference Liberty Division. Millie Kipp won the race while teammate Samantha Budd took third.

The boys were nearly as impressive, going 3-1 to improve to 5-1. Ray Parsons led the way with a second-place finish. The big result for the Eagles was the 10-point win over Sterling, the team head coach Mark Drummond viewed as a measuring stick coming into the season.

GIRLS' TENNIS

After waiting half the season to play on its home courts, the girls' tennis team was forced to wait a little longer. Heavy rains washed out Friday’s home match with Sterling, delaying the home opener until Wednesday, when the Eagles host Overbrook. The team went 1-1 on the week, defeating Haddon Heights to improve to 3-4 on the year. Singles players Marthalyn Johnson, Jaelynne King and Katie Schober each won in two sets against Haddon Heights.

FOOTBALL

For the second straight week West Deptford was able to empty its bench as it . Jake Hannan hooked up with Tom Jakubowski on a pair of first-quarter touchdowns, and Gerald Towns took over from there, rushing for three scores and over 140 yards on just five carries. The defense was also stellar, holding the Green Wave to under 100 yards of total offense.

THIS WEEK

–You don’t have to look hard to find the “must see” game this week, as the Haddonfield football team visits West Deptford in a rematch of last year’s South Jersey Group II championship game, won by the Bulldawgs. Last fall, West Deptford downed Haddonfield in the regular season on its way to a division title, but Haddonfield got revenge in the state playoff game.

This year both teams enter 2-0 after a pair of dominating wins. The winner of this game will be the frontrunner for a division title and will also put themselves in great shape for a top seed in the playoffs.

–The girls' tennis team finally gets to use its home courts on Wednesday against Overbrook in a match the Eagles will enter as favorites.

–The boys' and girls' cross-country teams will looks to stay on the winning course on Thursday against Collingswood and Audubon.

–The field hockey team will be busy with games against Haddon Heights (today), Sterling (Wednesday) and Kingsway (Friday).
