WDHS Team of the Year Nominees

The year-end awards are on their way, starting with Team of the Year.

It’s been a remarkable year for the athletic department. Conference championships were won, records were broken, and streaks were snapped.

Over the next week we will take a look back at the best of the best, naming the team, male and female of the year. The series will start with the Team of the Year.

Girls' track team: The Eagles were dominant throughout the season, losing  just one meet to conference champion Haddonfield. Anchored by the and the , a handful of records were broken on the track and in the field.

Wrestling team: After losing so many talented wrestlers to graduation, some in the wrestling community wondered if West Deptford had any shot to match the heights the program reached the previous couple of seasons. As it turns out, the Eagles topped them.

West Deptford won its first 15 matches, including to clinch the programs first division title since 1978. West Deptford also got .

Football team: A was the only blemish on a season that included more than a fair share of blowout wins. While that loss kept the team from winning a division title, it certainly didn’t leave the Eagles dejected. One month later, West Deptford got its revenge on the biggest stage if all, . Gerald (Towns) Owens had a breakout season and capped it off with 182 yards and three touchdowns in the championship game.

Golf team: Second place had become a common result for the Eagles in the Colonial Conference. West Deptford was always good, but Haddonfield was always a little better, That changed this year as West Deptford went 1-1 against its rival, , to earn a share of the title. The team was led by Kevin Brockway, John Meagher and Matt Santarelli.

The winner will be announced on Wednesday and will be followed by the Boys’ and Girls' Athletes of the Year.
