West Deptford Basketball Teams Split with Woodbury

The boys lost a close one, 70-63, while the girls are now within reach of a single-season win record with their 46-27 win.

If there’s such a thing as a good loss, the West Deptford boys’ basketball team found it Thursday night.

In a dogfight against Group 1 powerhouse Woodbury, and down point guard Justin Hansen, sidelined earlier this week with a 104 temperature, the Eagles built a small lead at halftime and hung with the Thundering Herd until late, before falling, 70-63.

Tom Jakubowski, who scored a game-high 20 points—bolstered by a monster second half that saw him score 17—led West Deptford, which got major contributions from Tim Fair (15 points) and the largely-unheralded TJ Harcum (14 points) in the losing effort.

Woodbury’s Dwaun Martin and Mike Smith combined for 31 points in the second half, though, which was largely the difference-maker.

On the girls’ side, West Deptford did what it’s done best lately: built a solid first-half lead, before suffocating its opponents in the second half.

The Eagles put up 26 points in the first half on their way to a 14-point advantage at halftime, then widened the gulf even further in the third on their way to a 46-27 win.

The victory takes the girls’ squad to 16-7 on the season, just two wins shy of tying the school record for wins in a season for the second straight year.

The girls have regular-season games against Bordentown, Haddon Heights and Haddon Township remaining before the start of the playoffs, and with a new single-season win mark possible before they take on Deptford in the opening round.

Editor's note: this article has been updated to reflect an additional game added to the regular season for the girls' team.
