West Deptford Girls', Boys' Basketball Split with Overbrook

The girls came away with the win on the road, while the boys saw an early lead dwindle late in a home loss Thursday night.

The girls’ basketball team bounced back from a loss to Paulsboro with a thrashing of Overbrook Thursday night in what turned out to be something of a defensive showcase.

After building a 22-15 lead after the opening quarter, the Eagles clamped down in the second.

And clamped down hard.

With the win, the girls move to 9-5

For the West Deptford boys, it was a repeat of their first game against Overbrook, which saw a late lead slip away.

The Eagles took a commanding, 33-19 lead at halftime, fueled by a 16-4 run to close the first half, but things started to unravel as Overbrook stepped up the pressure in the second half.

And after Tim Fair was knocked out of the game with an eye injury midway through the third quarter, West Deptford’s ability to weather the storm was crippled. Fair had scored 11 points before getting injured, and the Eagles couldn’t quite find a way to replace his effort.

Their lead dwindled to eight points by the end of the third quarter, and Overbrook took the lead with two minutes left and never gave it back, amassing 31 points in the fourth quarter for the 68-60 win.

Justin Hansen was a bright spot on offense for West Deptford, and pulled the Eagles within four with a rainbow three-pointer late, but it wasn’t enough.

With the loss, the West Deptford boys fall to 7-7 on the season.

The boys play against Saturday, hosting Wall Township, and both teams will be in action Tuesday against conference rival Haddonfield.
