Nothing says West Deptford pep rally like marching band, cheerleaders and—yes, an appearance by Darth Vader. Cramming the West Deptford High School auditorium in a tidal wave of green and white, the entire student body gathered for their annual homecoming pep rally.
Wrapping up spirit week, all students and faculty gathered to show off some school spirit and to pump up the varsity football team as they headed into their homecoming game against Collingswood High School.
Proving a success, the Eagles went on to defeat the Panthers, 64-6, Friday night.
Earlier in the auditorium, there was little doubt that the Eagles couldn’t pull it off. Mike Seeley, a math teacher and one of the rally’s announcers, expected a big win the for the Eagles.
“Pep rallies are awesome, we’re really psyched,” said Seeley as students began to fill the stands.
Once underway, cheers and music filled the air as the marching band lead the rally, followed by a performance from the cheerleaders and an introduction for all the fall teams. West Deptford’s dance team was also on hand for the festivities, helping to end the rally with an original performance.
“Everyone comes together and we are all cheering,” says curriculum director Kristin O’Neil, who can remember back to her own days as an Eagles cheerleader.
Following the introduction of homecoming court, came the traditional games. No shortage of laughs here, as the court played participated in a game of “pep rally princess.” Girls of the court raced to dress up the boys in some sparkly drag.
“We are all one big collective family,” said athletic director Tim Cammarota.
Students were also treated to an unexpected visit from none other than Darth Vader, who honored the Class of 2013 as the Renaissance Club’s Star Wars contest winners. The senior class went on to clean house as they walked away as winners of spirit week.
