West Deptford Saves Thousands on Tennis Courts Bid

New courts at the high school came in $56,000 under budget.

West Deptford tennis coach Aaron Burr has joked that the high school's tennis courts are a little like Wimbledon–not because you have to break out the dress whites, or because they serve strawberries and cream at home matches, but because of the carpet of grass growing through giant cracks throughout the six courts.

He won't be able to make that joke much longer, though, as replacement of 's tennis courts could start in a matter of days, and well under budget, after the school board approved a contract for the project Monday night.

Three companies bid on the project, according to William Thompson, the district’s business administrator, and the low bid was from Jersey Construction of Hammonton, who set the price at $283,767.

The school board originally budgeted $340,000 for the project, meaning there’s now about $56,000 in the district’s capital improvement budget.

“I don’t know what we’re going to do with the money,” Thompson said, but has to first meet with the county executive business administrator to determine how the extra money can be used.

Thompson said he hopes they’ll be able to use it to fund some of the many other projects in the district’s overall improvement plan.

West Deptford Director of Facilities Myron Hall said it could be a matter of just a day or two before the old courts start to be demolished to make way for work on the new set.
