West Deptford Sports Wrap: Girls’ Track Dominates

It was another up-and-down day for West Deptford teams Thursday.

The girls’ track team opened their season in a big way, getting an 87-53 win over Haddon Heights and a 110-29 win over Gateway in a tri-meet that featured plenty of first-place finishes for the Eagles. Here’s how the day broke down:

Girls’ track

Samantha Budd, Megan Kirschling, Nicole Pinto and Claudia Theriault were multiple event winners as the Eagles put together wins over Haddon Heights and Gateway Thursday. Budd won the 400 and 800 and helped win the 4x400, Pinto won the 400 hurdles and the 200 and ran in the 4x400, while Kirschling won the 110 hurdles, long jump and high jump. Theriault won the pole vault against both schools and added a win in the triple jump against Gateway.

The Eagles also got wins from Megan Knoblock (1600), Millie Kipp (3200), and Marthalyn Johnson (javelin).

Baseball

West Deptford dropped to 0-2 on the season, after Overbrook patched together a 2-1 walkoff win over the Eagles Thursday. The Eagles trailed 1-0 for much of the game, then tied it in the seventh, only to see the Rams turn around and plate the game-winner in the bottom of the inning.

Brendan Glass took the loss, while Harry Sturgis and Tyler Strano both had doubles in the game.

Golf

The Eagles moved to 2-0 with a home victory over Overbrook, 179-194. Kevin Brockway led the way with a 41 at RiverWinds on a blustery afternoon.

Boys’ lacrosse

The Eagles dropped a 9-8 decision on the road at Seneca to fall to 1-1 on the season.

Boys’ tennis

The Eagles fell to Gateway for their second loss of the season, 4-1.

Girls' lacrosse

Seneca got a hat trick from freshman Maddy Shutle to beat the Eagles, 10-8.

Boys' track

The Eagles got first-place finishes from Connor Smith (100), Kevin Cianfarini (400), Todd Jarrell (discus) and the 4x400 relay team, but were edged by Haddon Township, 79-61.
