West Deptford Wrestlers Get Good Draw in District 29 Tournament

Seven wrestlers are favored to be in the top three in their weight classes, and five others are an upset or two away from qualifying from regions.

The NJSIAA has released the seeds for this weekend’s District 29 Wrestling Tournament, and the bracket is littered with West Deptford High School wrestlers in favorable positions.

Seven Eagles earned seeds in the top three of their respective weight classes, highlighted by Rory Bonner, who earned a No. 1 seed in the 182-pound weight class.

Tyler Kaminski (113), Evan Zuzulock (120) and Gerald Owens (215) each earned No. 2 seeds, while Steve Alt (126), Christian Terinoni (132) and Phil Fisher (170) were slotted as third seeds.

If each wrestler finished at or above their respective seeds, the Eagles would send an impressive seven wrestlers to the Region 8 wrestling tournament for the second consecutive year. The top three finishers from each weight class advance to the prestigious tournament, which begins Tuesday at Egg Harbor Township.

Not to be left out of the mix is a group of wrestlers who are one upset—on paper, at least—away from qualifying for regions. Griffin Bonner (106), Scott Dennis (148), and Dan Gibson (152) are each seeded fourth, while Mark Fisher (195) and David Branco (heavyweight) are No. 5 seeds.

Rory Bonner, Zuzulock and Kaminski each made it to regions last year, with Zuzulock doing so as the District 29 champion. All three lost in the quarterfinals.

The action gets started with the pre-quarterfinals and quarterfinals Friday at 5 p.m. at Gloucester County College. It continues Saturday, starting at 11 a.m., with consolations and finals slated to take place starting at 3 p.m.
