What to Take from the West Deptford Football Passing League

West Deptford finished in second place in the summer 7-on-7 passing league.

The 7-on-7 passing league came to a close Tuesday night, and wrapped up its season with a second place finish after a 5-2 regular season. West Deptford took down Haddon Township in the semifinals before falling short against Penns Grove in the finals.

So what does it all mean?

Coaches will be quick to tell you that they don’t put too much stock in an all-passing league, but that doesn’t mean a few things become a bit clearer heading into training camp, which opens in a couple weeks.

West Deptford head coach Clyde Folsom talked with West Deptford Patch Tuesday night and gave some insight into what he felt were the key points to take away from the summer season.

Patch: What were the most important developments from the summer league?

Folsom: As I said many times before, our approach for this is to first, work on conditioning and then second, we hope to have a pretty good idea of who are secondary will be. We are establishing depth. We have a pretty good idea of who the four or five will be in terms of steady players in the secondary and we are getting better.

Offensively, we get to run around and catch the football which is something we don’t get to do a whole lot of in the season.

Patch: How is the quarterback position shaping up?

Folsom: Right now, Alex Hilbmann is our No. 1 quarterback. He manages the offense very well and is improving as a passer. Mike Daws has come in and has done an outstanding job, but right now I would say if I had to commit to who our quarterback is, I would say it is Alex Hilbmann. Mike Daws is certainly right there on his tail and (sophomore) Isaiah Easterling is a talented young quarterback as well.

Patch: Have any younger players stood out?

Folsom: Herb Snyder, who was a JV player a year ago, has developed really well as one of our corners and is a sure-handed receiver. Isaiah Easterling has been a young pleasant surprise.

Patch: Is there anyone who can step up and help offset the loss of Tom Jakubowski at receiver?

Folsom: I think Shai Mumford (who has been out with an injury) certainly has the ability. He has the speed and the ability to go up and get the ball as he proved in spring football and early camp in late June. Herb Snyder has proven himself more often than not, not only in the passing league, but last year at JV as well. We feel pretty confident in our receivers this year, so it’s something I certainly feel we will be able to do and be better at.

Patch: What is on the schedule for the next couple of weeks?

Folsom: (Tonight) is our last night of conditioning with Velocity. We will lift on Friday and next week we spend three nights of testing with a 10-component Ironman championship. Then we begin camp August 11.
