Sex Offender Recidivism

Sex Offender Recidivism rates and how they are calculated are misleading and dangerous to the Public.. Most studies only include a reconviction, or a return to prison. Recidivism is most often calculated as receiving any new “felony” legal sanction of any type

This is so misleading due to plea deals, misdemeanor infractions and the cost of long term follow up and the “vast” number of unreported assaults. Pro-sex offender advocates love to tout a minimal re-offend rate and hope that will satisfy the average person. What they don’t mention are the variables, as type of offender, amount of offenders studied, and the length of the study. More important, they don’t mention who “paid for the study”. It is in the DOJ and the correctional systems best interest to underestimate recidivism to alleviate the fears of the public by down-playing the dangers sexually motivated offenders actually do pose. The department of Corrections it seems, would rather house low level drug dealers versus those convicted of sexually based crimes when offenders are mandated costly treatment from outside contractors and separate facilities from the general population. It is more cost effective to release offenders back into society where offenders pay for the privilege of registering, pay for the privilege of Probation with minimal oversight and feed the various agencies involved with mandates that offenders are in “premise”, suppose to abide by but in practice often do not. With recent and even not so recent horrendous headlines of crimes against societies most vulnerable, it’s obvious the public is being “Played” a deadly game for no other reason than budget. It is also woefully apparent that it will be left up to the public to rectify what our Justice system refuses to address.
