2012 Senior League Eastern Regional: NY, Mass. Win

Auburn, MA, batted around in four different innings and set a regional record for runs scored in a game with a 35-0 win over Scarborough, ME in opening-night action at the 2012 Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional Friday night.

Tyler Destardin went 3-for-4 with two home runs and seven RBI in the game. His six runs scored tied a regional record and the seven RBI was just one shy of a tournament record. Tyler Lamanda and Ryan Kozlowski each went 5-for-6 with three runs scored, as well. The five hits tied a regional record.

Auburn scored six in the second, nine each in the third and fourth and eight in the fifth as they batted around in four consecutive innings. The previous record for runs in a regional game was 29 by Freehold, NJ in a 2004 game against Haverstraw, NY.

Auburn will face South Vineland, NJ, in a winner’s bracket game at 7:30 pm on Saturday. Scarborough will face the loser of the Upper Moreland, PA–Talbot, MD game in an elimination game Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

Earlier in the evening, Stony Point, NY bounced back from an early 5-0 hole, taking advantage of several miscues for a 9-5 win over Johnston, RI in the opening game of the 2012 Senior League Baseball Eastern Regional at Union Field.

Following a one-hour delay for lightning and light rain, Stony Point regrouped to score twice in the third, once in the fourth and four times in the fifth to erase a five-run deficit and take a 7-5 lead.

Johnston jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first on just two hits. Jarrod Podmaska lined a two-run single to give the Rhode Island champs an early 4-0 advantage.

Taking advantage of five Johnston errors and a couple of other miscues, Stony Point chipped away with eight unanswered unearned runs. Nick Van Skyrok’s RBI single tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth, followed by Jon Peter Vail scoring the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

That made a winner out of Van Skyock in relief, pitching 2-1/3 shutout innings.

Stony Point will face Naamans Little League of Wilmington, DE at 2 p.m. Saturday, while Johnston will await an elimination bracket opponent for Sunday at 2 p.m. It will face the loser of the West Deptford, NJ–Orange, CT game slated for Saturday evening.
