Jakubowski Praised at Board Meeting for Coach of the Year Honors

The West Deptford School Board acknowledged the boys' soccer head coach for his many accomplishments during the 2012 season.

Recognition for service has been a common theme at West Deptford school board meetings in the past couple of months.

That same night, board president Chris Strano made sure to recognize other West Deptford staff as well, particularly in the form of one coach who has taken the school community by storm.

Steve Jakubowski, a 22-year-old alum of West Deptford High School was given accolades by Strano and the school board for being named the South Jersey Times boys' soccer Coach of the Year. He was acknowledged as the school board approved Jakubowski to return as an assistant coach for the Eagles baseball team. Jakubowski got his coaching career started last spring when he coached the JV team after graduation from Long Island University.

Strano noted Jakubowski's accomplishments as a first-year head coach, stating how remarkably impressed he was at the turnaround the soccer team made. The young head coach and his West Deptford team stunned many in South Jersey by winning the Group 2 sectional championship and advancing to the state semifinals, where they lost in overtime. Strano noted that, for a few weeks, the soccer team's accomplishments them to the forefront of the West Deptford sports' focus for a few weeks in the midst of a season where the football team was making a playoff run en route to the South Jersey Group 2 title.

West Deptford may be hoping that some of the first year coach's magic rubs off on the baseball team itself come springtime. The Eagles hired John Oehler as the new head baseball coach last month. The Eagles are looking to improve on a 9-16 season in 2012.
