Little League Outlook: Majors Tournament Opens Tonight

It's baseball, baseball and more baseball for the next few weeks.

The heat is on in more ways than one, as far as Little League is concerned.

As temperatures spike toward 100, the District 15 races get even hotter, with the West Deptford Majors, winners of their pool, getting the elimination tournament started tonight at 6 p.m. against Pitman at Mantua.

The single-elimination bracket means it's win or go home, and judging by West Deptford's success in pool play–the team outscored its opponents by a 46-8 margin in going undefeated–there's a good chance they'll play out the week.

With a win over Pitman in the first round, the Majors would face either Glassboro, who they beat, 11-3, on Saturday, or Deptford.

In the older set, the Junior League baseball team starts its elimination tournament Thursday night at 6 p.m. in Deptford against an opponent still to be determined, though Harrison Township looks most likely right now.

The 10-11 baseball all-stars also get underway this week, opening pool play Thursday night at home against Pitman at 6 p.m.

There are still two age brackets a week away from starting–the 10-11 softball all-stars will kick things off next Tuesday, and the Senior League baseball all-stars begin next Monday for a shot at getting a berth in the Eastern Regional, which is slated to begin Aug. 5.
