Softball Team Surrenders First Runs, But No Losses

Plus: Zach Kaestner nets his 100th career goal for boys lax, and Claudia Theriault earns Athlete of the Meet honors.

Softball

Well, it had to happen at some point, right? The Eagles let up their first runs of the softball season—three of them—in the top of the fourth inning of an April 19 contest against Cherokee.

That was as close as the Chiefs would get, however, as the girls in green answered back with four more in the bottom of the inning en route to a 13-3 win. Marissa Linquist pitched the entire contest, striking out seven and walking two.

Then, in a contest against Audubon, Linquist led the way again, fanning three in seven innings and helping her own cause (2 for 3 at the plate with 2 RBI). The only damage came in a three-run shot from Audubon's Valerie Pineiro, as the Eagles flushed the Green Wave, 11-3.

Boys Lacrosse

Zach Kaestner scored his 100th career goal and the West Deptford boys lacrosse team remained a perfect 7-0 in a 14-1 whalloping of Woodstown. Kaestner finished with three points on the day, but was eclipsed on the score sheet by teammates Conor Smith (2 G, 4A), Mike Davis (4 G), and Joey Diaco (3 G, 1A).

Jeff Todd added three assists and Mike GrovesPaz Gismondi, and Brendan Persicketti also found the net. Diaco had himself a day, picking up 6 ground balls; Jonathan Hurlburt grabbed another 5. Nick D'Ottavi saved 8 of 9 shots in the win.

Boys Golf

West Deptford boys golfers took three of their last five in the past two weeks, falling to Kingsway 189-170, as Richie Stolz was outshot by Kingsway's Grant Gardner, 36-41. No other Eagle was within 10 strokes of Gardner's total.

The team also came up short against Burlington Twp., losing 178-173. For the Falcons, Nick Cappetti led all with a 37; Stolz put up 42 for West Deptford.

On the bright side, neither loss affected their divisional record, as West Deptford knocked off Haddon Heights (179-204), Overbrook (202-211) and Sterling (176-186), continuing what has been a very strong season. They are 7-0 in the conference and 7-2 overall.

Girls Track and Field

The West Deptford girls track team came out on top at their April 16 meet, pounding Overbrook 120-20 and edging Haddon Heights 72-68. The team had several first-place finishers at the meet:

  • Claudia Theriault: long jump, high jump, and pole vault
  • Nicole Pinto: triple jump, 100 and 200
  • Vanessa Cooper: 400
  • Alexa Petracci: 400 hurdles
