West Deptford Names Tim Campbell Cross-Country Assistant Coach

Bob Cooper remains head coach for the boys and girls teams after former coach Mark Drummond accepted a coaching position at Rutgers-Camden.

The West Deptford High School (WDHS) cross country program is back up to two coaches, as the board of education approved the appointment of Tim Campbell at its meeting on Monday.

The boys program was left with one coach when WDHS teacher Mark Drummond accepted a head coaching position with Rutgers University-Camden, where he will coach cross country and track and field.

Bob Cooper, the coach of the girls team since 2002 and assistant indoor track coach since 1997, was designated as the boys coach at the August 26 meeting of the board.

At that time, a couple runners on the team expressed concern that one coach couldn’t manage both teams, which comprise 20-25 runners combined.

The board told the students at that time that it would attempt to find an assistant to alleviate the pressure, and on Monday night, Campbell was appointed. His stipend has yet to be determined.

Campbell, a WDHS graduate, teaches English at the school and has served as an assistant track coach for more than six years, according to Jason Morrell, WDHS Assistant Principal, Athletics and Activities.

“With the teams being combined, it’s imperative that you have multiple coaches so each athlete has the proper training and time with a coach,” Morrell said.

The boys cross-country team is 2-1 so far this year, and finished second at the Briarwood Invitational over the weekend.

The girls team is 1-2 this season.
