West Deptford Boys Basketball, Wrestling Teams Suffer Season's First Losses

The boys basketball team fell to Collingswood, while the wrestling team lost to Hunterdon Central. The girls basketball team defeated Buena by one point.

The Collingswood High School basketball team edged West Deptford by one point in a battle of previously undefeated teams at Collingswood on Saturday, according to nj.com.

Tyree Mann-Barnes led the way for the Panthers with 16 points, two rebounds and an assist. He reached 16 points in part of four three-pointers, one of which he hit with no time left in the fourth quarter for the game-winning shot.

Jordan Wallace had 10 points, six rebounds and three assists in the win.

Justin Hansen led West Deptford with 14 points. Tyler Leonhardt had 13 points for the Eagles.

Collingswood built a 33-24 halftime lead, but West Deptford rallied with a 17-3 third quarter. The Panthers entered the final stanza down 41-34, but rallied over the final eight minutes, capped by Barnes’s game-winning shot.

Collingswood improved to 4-0, while West Deptford fell to 4-1.

Girls basketball

Tina Furfari led the way with 12 points as West Deptford defeated Buena, 49-48, on Saturday, according to nj.com.

Kelsey Brown had 10 points in the win.

The Eagles built an 18-2 lead in the first quarter, but weren’t able to maintain the wide margin. The Chiefs cut the lead to two points at the end of the third quarter. West Deptford was able to escape despite being outscored in the final stanza.

West Deptford improved to 3-2. Buena fell to 1-3.

Wrestling

Hunterdon Central handed West Deptford its first loss of the season on Saturday, defeating the Eagles, 40-12, according to nj.com.

Hunterdon Central collected two technical falls, two pins and four decisions in the win.

For West Deptford, Dylan Fischer scored a pinfall victory over Chris Taylor in one minute, one second. Griffin Bonner defeated Kyler Rodriguez, 4-0, at 120 pounds, and heavyweight Mark Fischer defeated Dan Hausman, 6-2.

Also on Saturday, West Deptford defeated Toms River East, 42-19.

Pinfall victories came from Bonner (113), Walt Vickery (138), Jarryd Ley (152) and Vito Nucci (220).  Paz Gismodi (132), Kevin McGlinchey (145), Chris Soto (160) and Mark Fischer (heavyweight) scored decision victories.

West Deptford is 2-1 as a team this season.
