West Deptford Sports: Postseason Arriving Soon

A number of Eagle teams seem well positioned to make some playoff noise.

Baseball

The Eagles are still in the hunt for a conference title, after taking two of three last week from against Overbrook (3-2) and Haddonfield (15-4).

Isaiah Easterling had another strong outing for the win, and Jimmy Sousa knocked in 4 RBI with a double and home run.

West Deptford is 6-2 in the Colonial Conference and 8-5 overall. There's just one more week before teams are drawn for the annual Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic (single-elimination tournament).

Softball

After battling through some injuries, the girls softball program is 9-3 and still in the conference hunt. Jessica Linquist added another win against Egg Harbor Township (3-0); Sydney Ponto beat Audubon (11-3).

The Eagles also thumped Haddonfield (18-2), in a game in which Ponto hit a tape-measure home run.

If—sorry, when—the team hits 14 wins this season (possibly as early as May 7 against Paulsboro), Coach Amanda Schramm will capture her 100th career victory.

Boys Lacrosse

At 10-1, the Eagles were handed their first loss by Kingsway on May 19, but are still cruising along and adding pieces.

Attack Nick Ellis joined the lineup against Haddonfield last week and potted 4 goals. He was eclipsed only by Mike Reardon, who added 5 more.

The duo combined for another 12 goals and 10 points in a rain-soaked affair at Washington Township on Monday—the first of three big games this week. Bishop Eustace and Clearview are up next.

Girls Lacrosse

The girls lacrosse team stands at 8-2 on the season after a 17-3 win at home over Woodstown on April 25, a game in which they dedicated their new scoreboard dedication.

The Eagles play pivotal conference games this week, and can earn an Olympic Freedom Conference title outright with victories against Collingswood and at home under the lights on Friday versus Bishop Eustace.

Track

The West Deptford girls and boys track teams are both 5-1 in the conference, and look to further separate themselves from the pack at Tuesday's Gloucester County Colonial Conference Track Night at West Deptford High School.

Senior Night festivities begin at 5:15 p.m., and then it's a nighttime track meet with opponents Woodbury and Paulsboro. Field events start at 5:30, and the running begins at 6:15 p.m.

Tennis

At 4-7, the boys are trying to pad their record with a few more victories to avoid facing highest-seeded Haddonfield in the first round in the NJSIAA playoffs.

The careers of senior co-captains and three-year lettermen Jimmy Albert and Mike McKendry were honored in an acknowledgment before their match against Collingswood.

Golf

At 7-2 overall, with their only losses coming in non-conference play, the Eagles had a Monday match against Haddonfield at Tavistock cancelled due to rain.

Thanks to West Deptford High School Athletic Director Tim Cammarota for providing the information in this article.

Correction: an earlier draft of this article reported that Jessica Linquist pitched two wins against Audubon and Egg Harbor Twp.; the latter game was actually won by Sydney Ponto.
