Woodbury Grad Shawney Kersey Leaves Penn State Football Team

Kersey cites personal reasons for departing after starting the first two games of the season.

Penn State has lost another Gloucester County product, after starting wide receiver Shawney Kersey, a Woodbury High School grad, left the team for personal reasons.

The news came out in a 13-word Twitter post Wednesday morning from the official Penn State football account, which cited coach Bill O’Brien on the announcement. By late afternoon, Kersey’s name was scrubbed from the official roster on the university’s website.

Kersey follows West Deptford’s in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal. Unlike Pollard, ESPN.com reported Kersey, a redshirt junior, remains a student at Penn State.

The Thundering Herd alum started the first two games of the season at wideout for the Nittany Lions, catching six passes for 44 yards against Ohio University and Virginia.
