Calling All Fans of the Woodbury Block Party: It's Back

The return of city's downtown Block Party on Sunday will feature a beer garden, live music and a pie-eating contest for kids.

Woodbury's going backward for its biggest event of the season.

The city's Main Street organization is reviving the downtown Block Party, after a four-year hiatus (the city held smaller downtown events in 2010 and 2011 to replace the traditional Block Party.)

The Block Party runs from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 3 on Broad Street, from Delaware Street to Barber Avenue.

The event will feature a beer garden, live music and a pie-eating contest for kids 12 and under, judged by competitive eater and local celebrity Bill "El Wingador" Simmons.

Square Peg Skateshop on Carpenter Street will hold a "Block Party Skate Jam" beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, with prizes for the best skateboard tricks.

Larry Geiger, executive director of Main Street Woodbury, said that as soon as he took the job in late 2011, people started asking when the Block Party would make a comeback.

The annual event drew thousands of people to the city's main drag. After the last Block Party in 2008, Main Street Woodbury struggled to find enough volunteers to plan and run the event.

But with a recently revitalized Main Street volunteer program, the group is ready to restart the tradition.

"We just tried to get back that same old feel" for the Block Party, Geiger said.

Main Street Woodbury is a nonprofit group focused on the revitalization of the city's downtown.
