Gatewood allegedly killed his nephew, Elijah P. Gatewood-Gabriel, after an argument early Friday morning.
A family argument led to the murder of a Deptford man early Friday morning, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office (GCPO). Chad Gatewood, 45, and his nephew, Elijah P. Gatewood-Gabriel, 20, allegedly got in a confrontation around midnight, when Gatewood stabbed Gatewood-Gabriel multiple times with a kitchen knife in the family's apartment at the Inverness Apartments on Delsea Drive in Deptford, GCPO spokesman Bernie Weisenfeld said. After police and medics were alerted via a 12:01 a.m. 9-1-1 call, Gatewood-Gabriel was taken to Underwood-Memorial Hospital in Woodbury, where he was pronounced dead at 12:54 a.m., Weisenfeld said, and an autopsy Friday confirmed Gatewood-Gabriel died of the stab wounds. Gatewood, who had to be …

Each week, Patch takes a peek at some of the more surprising, shocking, stunning and occasionally silly police-related incidents reported throughout New Jersey for "OMGs from NJ PDs." On the Wrong Track: Contrary to popular belief, there is no "wrong side of the tracks." Well, not unless you count the top side. A driver who made a wrong turn wound up on the train tracks paralleling Route 17, leading authorities to shut down New Jersey Transit traffic on the line, according to Hasbrouck Heights Police. It took police about an hour to remove the vehicle from the tracks. We're not sure how long it took onlookers to remove their palms from their faces. Not Quite a Smoking Gun, But Close: You think smoking's bad for you? It's even worse if you'…

Downgrading crimes to ordinance violations means a faster court system and more money in fines, but subverts justice, according to John Paff.
What do the game show Let's Make a Deal and West Deptford's municipal court have in common? Entirely too much, according to one Libertarian watchdog. West Deptford’s municipal court is raking in money by giving defendants the opportunity to bargain their crimes down to ordinance violations in exchange for steep fines, in violation of a 1998 directive from then-Attorney General Peter Verniero that effectively banned the process, according to John Paff, chair of the New Jersey Libertarian Party’s Open Government Task Force. “They can't play with justice like this,” Paff said. “Money shouldn't be the grease in the wheels of justice.” And to make matters worse, Paff said, West Deptford Prosecutor Kelly Conroy's municipal ordinance of choice …

McKenna will move from detective sergeant to lieutenant.
West Deptford’s new police lieutenant is no stranger to the department—any part of it, actually. Sean McKenna, who’s worked in virtually every role the police department has to offer, from patrol to K-9 to narcotics to the detective’s unit, was sworn in as the new lieutenant Thursday night, after being chosen from among three candidates for the position, which was vacated when Samuel DiSimone was promoted to deputy chief in March. For McKenna, a lifelong West Deptford resident, it’s a chance to take on additional responsibility in protecting his hometown—something he’s grown used to as he’s ascended the ranks over more than a decade of service. “I know the community well—I know the issues in our community,” he said. “I'm just excited to …
