Brendan Gill Helps Eagles Shut Down Red Bank In Lax Playoff Opener

In a sport as high-scoring as high school boys’ lacrosse, it can be easy to look directly to the offensive numbers and pass by what is happening on the defensive end. West Deptford High School junior goalie Brendan Gill understands that, but also knows his job is to make the big saves when called upon. Gill—a first-year varsity goalie—did exactly that Thursday afternoon, playing like a veteran in the Eagles 13-6 win over the Red Bank Buccaneers in the first round of the NJSIAA Group 1 playoffs. West Deptford Girls' Lacrosse Falls in Second Round to Allentown

The Eagles couldn't match the Redbirds' offensive firepower.

The good news is West Deptford High School’s girls’ lacrosse team held the state’s leading scorer to one of her lowest-scoring games of the season. The bad news is that Allentown’s Alex Moore still scored five goals and dished out four assists, as the Eagles fell in the second round of the South Jersey, Group 2 playoffs Thursday, 15-5. For West Deptford, Maddie Waschko (2 goals) and Jess Hill (3) provided the offensive effort, with Emily Whalin adding three assists. It wasn’t enough to contain Allentown’s jet-fueled offense, however; the Redbirds leaped out to an 8-2 lead at the break and didn’t slow down much in the second half on the way to the win.

West Deptford Softball Gets No. 6 Seed, Home Game in Playoffs

The Eagles will open against Willingboro next week.

West Deptford High School’s softball team scored a seed in the bottom half of the draw in the South Jersey, Group 2 tournament, and will get to play at least once at home when play begins next week. The Eagles are seeded No. 6, and will play Willingboro at West Deptford to open the playoffs Tuesday. If they can get past the Chimeras, the Eagles have a Colonial Conference foe in the second round—either No. 14 Collingswood or No. 3 Haddon Heights, a team that’s handed them a pair of tough losses this season and bounced them from the playoffs last year.

Megan Kirschling, Samantha Budd Shine at Haddonfield Invitational

The Eagles seniors dominated their respective events on the girls’ side Thursday.

Megan Kirschling brought home four first-place finishes and the Most Outstanding Performer award, and Samantha Budd blistered the field in her specialty as West Deptford lit up the Haddonfield Invitational Thursday evening. Kirschling thoroughly dominated her disciplines—she won the high jump, tying her meet record at 5-6, leaped 34-11 in the triple jump, went under 15 seconds in the 100 hurdles and helped the 4x400 relay team to a win to finish out the night. Her hurdle win was perhaps the most impressive—Kirschling got out ahead early and never looked back. “She won it by a full hurdle length,” head coach Mark Drummond said. West Deptford Baseball Gets Final Seed in Group 2 Tournament

The Eagles are round-bound in the playoffs this year.

A handful of losses before the playoff cutoff date means the West Deptford High School baseball team faces an arduous route through the playoffs, with no shot at a home game at any point in the postseason. The Eagles, the defending sectional champs, drew the No. 16 seed in Group 2 and will take on top seed GCIT in the opening round Monday. If the Eagles can pull off the upset, they’ll have to hop on the bus in each subsequent round. Some familiar foes could lurk in the second and third round—Delran, who the Eagles beat on the road in the playoffs last year, could be a second-round opponent, and No. 4 Haddonfield looks like a lock to be around in the semifinals, should the Eagles manage a pair of wins.

All season the West Deptford High School baseball team has been looking for a win that could change the temperature of the squad and take it to a higher level. Game after game passed and the trademark win never came. Finally, Wednesday arrived, and the Eagles found themselves in position to grab a big victory. It would be too late to make any significant impact on the regular season, but could give the team some much-needed momentum heading into the Group 2 playoffs.
