NJ Senate Approves Steve Sabol Day

The late Sabol, a Moorestown resident, co-founded NFL Films and is credited for changing how fans watch and understand football.

New Jersey is one step closer to memorializing a Moorestown man who changed the way America watches football. The state Senate approved a resolution naming Oct. 2 "Steve Sabol Day." Sabol is the late president and co-founder of the Mt. Laurel-based NFL Films. He in September 2012 after an 18-month battle with brain cancer. Sabol’s NFL Films captured football action on and off the field as no other had. Sabol helped humanize football, and its players, to the nation. His footage used dramatic techniques—slow motion, extreme close-ups—that viewers previously hadn’t seen employed in sports coverage, but Sabol’s storytelling was at the heart of his clips. I will have to agree with you on this one Matt, After analyzing Mr. Cato's recent posts, I will have to say he comes off as an extremely angry person. Most if not all of his posts were negative and sarcastic as was this one. I never heard of Steve Sabol, but if the legislators want to do a civic duty and name a day after him... So what. How about making today "Brutus Cato Day". Happy now Brutus…   more ›

West Deptford Sports Update

Eagles Continue to Make Playoff Noise

Find out how the West Deptford teams are faring in their NJSIAA championship quests.

West Deptford got past Delaware Valley in the opening round of the NJSIAA Group I playoffs behind a strong effort from Michael Reardon, the Star-Ledger reports. The attackman potted 6 goals and helped on three others in the 13-10 victory. Reardon, who returned only a few weeks ago from a shoulder injury that had sidelined him for the bulk of the year, is making the most of his shortened season, having notched his 100th career goal back in April. The next test for the Eagles will come Thursday, when they take on the Rumson Dawgs in the semifinal round. Top gun Rachel Krott had a hat trick, Paige Paratore threw in two more goals, and Christina Petito and Madelyn Waschko also found the back of the net for West Deptford in a 7-4 victory over …

100s for West Deptford Softballers

Amanda Schramm earned her 100th career victory last week. Not long after, two of her players knocked in their 100th hits.

It was a week of hundreds for the West Deptford softball team. First, senior Sydney Ponto wrapped up the centenary victory for coach Amanda Schramm in a 14-strikeout, one-hit shutout of Sterling. Then, Ponto and teammate Marissa Linquist made a little noise of their own, notching the 100th hits of their high school careers in a 12-0 stomping of Lindenwold. They did it within two at-bats of one another. Linquist was 2-for-3 at the plate in the game, scoring once, doubling, and knocking in 4 RBIs. She also pitched 5 innings for the win, walking only two batters in the process. Ponto's hit was her only one in the contest, but she also scored three times. The duo, which have helped turn the team into a force in the conference, "have worked …

Broad Street Run Bans Backpacks for 2013 Race

Runners are being encouraged to bring as little as possible with them this year.

Following the backpack bombings at the Boston Marathon two weeks ago, runners in this year's Broad Street Run in Philadelphia won't be able to tote their gear in a backpack, race organizers announced in a mass email to participants Monday. Taking a page from the Transportation Safety Administration's playbook, race organizers are mandating runners use clear plastic drawstring bags, which will be handed out at the expo Friday and Saturday, to stow their gear this year. “You are strongly encouraged to bring as little as possible with you to the start of the race,” race organizers said in the email to runners. “All items brought into the start area are subject to search and/or confiscation.” Race organizers only indicated backpacks would be …

Oh stop with the over dramatization of things regarding bags. My god the event is not just like many of the other races around the country. It's much more compact then Boston and has more participants. What a bunch of whiners.   more ›

West Deptford Sports: Postseason Arriving Soon

A number of Eagle teams seem well positioned to make some playoff noise.

The Eagles are still in the hunt for a conference title, after taking two of three last week from against Overbrook (3-2) and Haddonfield (15-4). Isaiah Easterling had another strong outing for the win, and Jimmy Sousa knocked in 4 RBI with a double and home run. West Deptford is 6-2 in the Colonial Conference and 8-5 overall. There's just one more week before teams are drawn for the annual Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic (single-elimination tournament). After battling through some injuries, the girls softball program is 9-3 and still in the conference hunt. Softball Team Surrenders First Runs, But No Losses

Plus: Zach Kaestner nets his 100th career goal for boys lax, and Claudia Theriault earns Athlete of the Meet honors.

Well, it had to happen at some point, right? The Eagles let up their first runs of the softball season—three of them—in the top of the fourth inning of an April 19 contest against Cherokee. That was as close as the Chiefs would get, however, as the girls in green answered back with four more in the bottom of the inning en route to a 13-3 win. Marissa Linquist pitched the entire contest, striking out seven and walking two. Then, in a contest against Audubon, Linquist led the way again, fanning three in seven innings and helping her own cause (2 for 3 at the plate with 2 RBI). The only damage came in a three-run shot from Audubon's Valerie Pineiro, as the Eagles flushed the Green Wave, 11-3. Zach Kaestner scored his 100th career goal and the…
