The West Deptford boys’ track team came away with big wins a week ahead of sectionals.
Nick Pulli won the Most Outstanding Field Athlete award and runners piled up wins in the 800, 3200 and 4x400 as West Deptford’s boys’ track team got in a solid tune-up ahead of sectionals at the Haddonfield Invitational Thursday night. Pulli threw 156-11 in the discus to win that event over Haddon Township’s Connor Wade (155-10) and West Deptford’s Todd Jarrell (150-10), and finished second in the shot put by two and a half inches, throwing 49-11. Elsewhere in the field, the Eagles scored top-10 finishes in the javelin from Brandon Holmes (fifth at 138-11) and Jarrell (seventh at 132-10). Shai Mumford was fourth in the long jump (20-2.5) and Sean Weidler was second in the pole vault, leaping 11 feet. On the track, the boys got a one-two …

The junior keeper was solid in net, as the Eagles recorded a 13-6 win over Red Bank in the Group 1 playoffs.
In a sport as high-scoring as high school boys’ lacrosse, it can be easy to look directly to the offensive numbers and pass by what is happening on the defensive end. West Deptford High School junior goalie Brendan Gill understands that, but also knows his job is to make the big saves when called upon. Gill—a first-year varsity goalie—did exactly that Thursday afternoon, playing like a veteran in the Eagles 13-6 win over the Red Bank Buccaneers in the first round of the NJSIAA Group 1 playoffs. West Deptford saw an 8-3 lead shrink to 8-6 in the later stages of the third quarter, when Gill made a big save to prevent the Buccaneers from closing within a goal. Less than a minute later, attacker Mike Reardon fired home his third goal of the …

The Eagles are co-champs with Haddonfield after beating Audubon Thursday.
West Deptford’s golfers have their first conference championship in a decade, sharing the title with Haddonfield after a 175-205 win over Audubon at Beckett Golf Club Thursday. Kevin Brockway paced the Eagles with a 41, Matt Santarelli and Ritchie Stolz each shot 44 and Ryan Henry fired a 46 as West Deptford got back-to-back wins on back-to-back days at the Swedesboro course. It was only a week ago the Eagles beat Haddonfield for the first time in at least six years, 171-178, on a blustery day at RiverWinds. The team has been led by a core of seniors—Brockway, Santarelli, Henry, John Meagher and Zach Vorndran—who head coach John Cobb has called a special group, and the ones most likely to unseat Haddonfield. Check back with West Deptford …
The Eagles couldn't match the Redbirds' offensive firepower.
The good news is West Deptford High School’s girls’ lacrosse team held the state’s leading scorer to one of her lowest-scoring games of the season. The bad news is that Allentown’s Alex Moore still scored five goals and dished out four assists, as the Eagles fell in the second round of the South Jersey, Group 2 playoffs Thursday, 15-5. For West Deptford, Maddie Waschko (2 goals) and Jess Hill (3) provided the offensive effort, with Emily Whalin adding three assists. It wasn’t enough to contain Allentown’s jet-fueled offense, however; the Redbirds leaped out to an 8-2 lead at the break and didn’t slow down much in the second half on the way to the win.
The Eagles will open against Willingboro next week.
West Deptford High School’s softball team scored a seed in the bottom half of the draw in the South Jersey, Group 2 tournament, and will get to play at least once at home when play begins next week. The Eagles are seeded No. 6, and will play Willingboro at West Deptford to open the playoffs Tuesday. If they can get past the Chimeras, the Eagles have a Colonial Conference foe in the second round—either No. 14 Collingswood or No. 3 Haddon Heights, a team that’s handed them a pair of tough losses this season and bounced them from the playoffs last year.
The Eagles seniors dominated their respective events on the girls’ side Thursday.
Megan Kirschling brought home four first-place finishes and the Most Outstanding Performer award, and Samantha Budd blistered the field in her specialty as West Deptford lit up the Haddonfield Invitational Thursday evening. Kirschling thoroughly dominated her disciplines—she won the high jump, tying her meet record at 5-6, leaped 34-11 in the triple jump, went under 15 seconds in the 100 hurdles and helped the 4x400 relay team to a win to finish out the night. Her hurdle win was perhaps the most impressive—Kirschling got out ahead early and never looked back. “She won it by a full hurdle length,” head coach Mark Drummond said. Budd, meanwhile, bounced back from a relatively slow time at the Gloucester County championships last week, …
The Eagles are round-bound in the playoffs this year.
A handful of losses before the playoff cutoff date means the West Deptford High School baseball team faces an arduous route through the playoffs, with no shot at a home game at any point in the postseason. The Eagles, the defending sectional champs, drew the No. 16 seed in Group 2 and will take on top seed GCIT in the opening round Monday. If the Eagles can pull off the upset, they’ll have to hop on the bus in each subsequent round. Some familiar foes could lurk in the second and third round—Delran, who the Eagles beat on the road in the playoffs last year, could be a second-round opponent, and No. 4 Haddonfield looks like a lock to be around in the semifinals, should the Eagles manage a pair of wins.
McGrory is hoping to compete for gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games this summer.
This article is sponsored by Citi. Amanda McGrory, of Kennett Square, PA, was just five years old when she was diagnosed with a rare disease called transverse myelitis that left her paralyzed from the waist down. But that didn't stop Amanda from becoming a speed demon and by age 10 she started racing with her wheelchair in the hope of becoming a Paralympian. Amanda has become one of the fastest wheelchair marathoners in the world. At the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, Amanda won the gold medal for the 5,000-meter race, a silver medal for the marathon, bronze for the 800-meter race and bronze for the women's 4x100 meter relay. She also won the 2011 New York City Marathon Women's Wheelchair race. The 25-year-old is now setting her sights on …
The Eagles led late, but Haddonfield stormed back to win, 5-4.
West Deptford led Haddonfield, 4-1, in the seventh inning, but ended up on the wrong side of a 5-4 result.
All season the West Deptford High School baseball team has been looking for a win that could change the temperature of the squad and take it to a higher level. Game after game passed and the trademark win never came. Finally, Wednesday arrived, and the Eagles found themselves in position to grab a big victory. It would be too late to make any significant impact on the regular season, but could give the team some much-needed momentum heading into the Group 2 playoffs. Back at the scene where it won a South Jersey title last year, West Deptford took a 4-1 lead into the seventh inning against Haddonfield. But instead of the breakthrough win, the Eagles got more heartbreak, as they committed two errors in the frame to squander the lead and …
