Alleged 'Antifreeze Killer' Formally Indicted for Murder

A Gloucester County grand jury formally charges Anne Castagna, who prosecutors say killed her grandmother-in-law Mary Groatman with antifreeze.

A woman accused of killing her husband’s grandmother by poisoning the elderly woman with antifreeze was indicted on a first-degree murder charge this week. Anne Castagna, 43, was formally charged in the death of Mary Groatman, her grandmother-in-law. Castagna is accused of poisoning Groatman, 88, at a Deptford rehabilitation center in August 2012. Prosecutors say Castagna researched the effects of antifreeze on the body before Groatman was killed. Ethylene glycol poisoning can happen after a victim ingests as little as 4 ounces of the sweet-tasting liquid, according to statistics from the National Institutes of Health, as the chemical damages organs like the brain, liver, kidneys and lungs. Accused Antifreeze Killer Anne Castagna Denied Bail Reduction

Anne Castagna, of Brooklawn, is suspected in the death of her husband's grandmother, Mary Groatman. She lost a bid to lower her $250,000 bail.

Anne Castagna, who stands accused of poisoning her grandmother-in-law in Deptford, was denied a bail reduction Wednesday and remains jailed on a first-degree murder charge. The Appellate Division of New Jersey Superior Court ruled that Castagna, 43, of Brooklawn, must pay $250,000 in bail to be released from custody. Castagna previously won a bail reduction from $350,000; her legal team sought a further reduction to $150,000. Castagna allegedly killed her husband’s grandmother, Mary Groatman, by poisoning the 88-year-old woman at the Deptford Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare. Alleged Antifreeze Killer Anne Castagna Charged with Murder, Bail Increased

Anne Castagna is accused of using antifreeze to poison her elderly in-law at a rehab facility in Deptford. The victim died Thursday.

The Brooklawn woman accused of fatally poisoning her grandmother-in-law with antifreeze now faces a murder charge.  Anne Castagna was served with the new charge at the Gloucester County Jail after the victim, 88-year-old Mary Groatman, was taken off life support by her family Thursday afternoon. Authorities served Groatman with the charge in the presence of her attorney, Fred Last.  In light of the more serious charge, Judge Walter L. Prosecutor: Castagna Researched Antifreeze's Effects Before Poisoning

Brooklawn resident Anne Castagna now faces a murder charge for allegedly poisoning her grandmother-in-law at a Deptford rehab center.

A Brooklawn woman researched the effects of antifreeze on the human body leading up to the alleged fatal poisoning of her grandmother-in-law at a Deptford rehab center this weekend, Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean Dalton said. Anne Castagna, 43, who will now face an upgraded charge of first-degree murder, allegedly slipped Mary Groatman, her husband’s grandmother, antifreeze in some form Sunday afternoon at the Deptford Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare, where Groatman had been recovering after a fall, Dalton said. Mary Groatman is in critical condition and her granddaughter-in-law, Anne Castagna, is in jail after the alleged poisoning.

Update, 5:34 p.m.—Anne Castagna now faces murder charges after Mary Groatman was taken off life support and died early Thursday afternoon. ------------- A Brooklawn woman is on life support and her granddaughter-in-law has been charged with attempted murder after an alleged poisoning at a rehab center in Deptford this weekend. Anne Castagna, 43, of Brooklawn, was arrested and charged with trying to kill Mary Groatman, 88, by using antifreeze at the rehab center Sunday, prosecutors said. The two women are related by marriage.  Castagna, who was held in the Gloucester County Jail in default of $250,000 bail, faces two counts of attempted murder and one count of aggravated assault.
