As Super Bowl Looms, Folsom Remembers Facing Off Against Flacco

Clyde Folsom talks about the day when West Deptford football walked away with a victory and Flacco walked away with a South Jersey record.

Quarterback Joe Flacco is preparing to lead the Baltimore Ravens into Super Bowl battle Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. But long before he was spiraling bombs for Baltimore, Flacco was a South Jersey kid making waves on the football field for Audubon High School. Flacco’s Colonial Conference play brought him to West Deptford a decade ago as a Green Wave player. “He just happened to get hot, stay hot and threw for a record number of yards,” Clyde Folsom, who has coached West Deptford football for 23 years, says of one particularly memorable matchup against the future NFL player. With all the time that has passed, Folsom still remembers when his team went up against Flacco. It was 2002, Flacco’s senior season and a year that would …

Field House Dedicated to 9/11 Victim Brandemarti Proposed to BOE

Organizers want to build and donate a field house in Nick Brandemarti Jr.'s name to honor the terrorism victim. All that's left is the school board's OK—and fundraising.

It's been 15 years since he graced the West Deptford football stadium; 11 since the unspeakable acts of terrorism on 9/11 killed this West Deptford native son. But Nick Brandemarti Jr.'s name could live on at the high school if a newly unveiled tribute to him moves forward. With the Nicky Brandemarti Memorial Golf Tournament wrapping up after 10 years, members of the West Deptford community banded together to plan a final tribute in the Brandemarti's name. With seven months of planning behind them, organizers revealed their plans to the school board Monday to donate and construct a new field house to memorialize the fallen West Deptford High School alum.  After learning about the proposal 36 hours prior, school board President Christopher …

Eagles Pound Way to Folsom's 200th Victory

Gerald Owens and Josh Cornelius rush for over 300 yards and five touchdowns in West Deptford's 45-24 win over Woodbury for coach Clyde Folsom's 200th career win.

After the final whistle blew in the West Deptford High School football team’s 45-24 win over Woodbury, Eagles’ head coach Clyde Folsom joked that, in terms of publicity for himself, he would be happy to stay at 199 wins forever. The way West Deptford’s offense was rolling Friday night, winning 200 games may only be the beginning for the longtime coach. Gerald Owens ran for three touchdowns and Josh Cornelius rushed for two more, delivering Folsom his 200th career victory as a head coach. “It’s difficult to think about winning 200 games,” said Folsom, who is 200-66-5 overall, with 166 wins at West Deptford and 34 at Bishop Eustace. "First of all, I am no where near the end, so it’s just another win. We are just so proud of how hard the kids…

Folsom Goes For Career No. 200 Against Woodbury

The longtime West Deptford head football coach could join a small club among South Jersey coaches.

Only six coaches in South Jersey history stand on the exclusive 200-win list. Clyde Folsom can become No. 7 tonight. The 22-year West Deptford head coach, currently sitting on a 199-66-5 record between his time with the Eagles and his five years with Bishop Eustace, will doubtless reach the milestone this season—but getting it against Woodbury would be something of an exclamation point. The Eagles were challenged by just two teams last season—Haddonfield, of course, but also by the Thundering Herd. Sure, the 28-0 score from that game last October makes it seem like another lopsided victory in a season of lopsided wins for West Deptford, but make no mistake: The shutout only came because of a pair of goal-line stands, and the Woodbury …
