Junior Women's Club Calling All Cooks in West Deptford

The club is putting out a call for recipe submissions from all members of the community.

Forget about Bobby Flay and Paula Deen, there are plenty of cooks right here in West Deptford’s own backyard. And through a new fundraising effort, the West Deptford Junior Women’s Club is ready to showcase some local talent with a one-of-a-kind cookbook. The West Deptford Junior Women’s Club hosts a number of fundraising efforts throughout the year to help residents in need. Last summer, members hosted a 5K to raise money, as well as hot yoga night at Laughing Buddha in December. Public relations chair Aimee Boucher says all proceeds from these efforts go into a fund that the club uses to give back to residents—such as paying a family’s PSE&G bill or helping a needy family with children’s medical costs. “We’re constantly looking for …

West Deptford Playing a Part in Superstorm Sandy Relief

Fundraising efforts for the American Red Cross are underway in West Deptford for those affected by Superstorm Sandy.

It is hard to believe a month has already passed since Superstorm Sandy devastated the East Coast, and still the effects of the storm remain for many. Last weekend, Gov. Chris Christie announced the storm caused an estimated $29.4 billion in damages. While West Deptford was fortunate enough to brave Superstorm Sandy with minimal damage, the township is not taking such good fortune for granted. After Mayor Raymond Chintall initially announced intentions to set up a sort of West Deptford-based funding, canisters are now popping up around West Deptford. For a Good Cause

From talking mattresses to candy bars, fundraising efforts abound this fall.

My car was accosted by a walking mattress on the corner of Red Bank and Crown Point this Saturday. Yeah, there’s one sentence I never thought I’d type. Then again, I never thought a tall, lanky mattress with arms and legs would run upto my silver Beetle and try to convince me to check out the sale going on at WDHS. After approaching my car, this particular mattress identified himself as Jack Baldwin, a senior baritone player for the award-winning West Deptford High School marching band. He and his bandmates—who skipped the box spring costumes but were waving hand-made posters—attempted to urge oncoming traffic to make a pit stop at the high school cafeteria, where the mattress sale was taking place.
