Authorities: Man Shot by Deptford Police Officer Dies

Deptford officer James Stuart is now charged with murder in the shooting of Woodbury resident David Compton, inside the officer's home.

Update, 4:05 p.m., 1/11/13: The Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office on Friday afternoon clarified the bail status for Deptford Police Officer James Stuart. His bail is set at $250,000. "Initially it was set at $500,000, but after a further review of the defendant’s circumstances, the court changed the amount to $250,000," the prosecutor's office said in a release. Stuart said during his call that Compton "was playing with one of my weapons," but did not say who the shooter was. "I don't know how it happened," he said. Deptford Police Officer James Stuart Charged in Shooting

A 27-year-old Woodbury man was shot in the head inside the officer's home early Saturday morning, authorities said.

A Woodbury man is in critical condition after a Deptford police officer shot him inside the officer's home early Saturday morning.  David Compton, 27, of Woodbury, was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden with a single gunshot wound to the head.  Deptford police officer James Stuart, 29, was charged Saturday with two counts of aggravated assault (one second degree and one third degree) in connection with the shooting, which happened at the officer's home on Stanford Avenue in Deptford at about 5 a.m.  Compton is not a police officer, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office.  Stuart posted the $10,000 bail set on his charges and was released from custody. An officer for about five years, he has been suspended from …
